US President Donald Trump has sacked Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, replacing him with the director of the CIA, Mike Pompeo.
Thanking Mr Tillerson for his service on Twitter, Mr Trump said the new state secretary would do "a fantastic job".
Mr Tillerson, a former chief executive of ExxonMobil, was only appointed to the job just over a year ago.
The president also nominated Gina Haspel to become the first woman director of the CIA.
The Department of State said Mr Tillerson had not spoken to the president and was "unaware of the reason" for his firing.
Under Secretary Steve Goldstein said: "The Secretary had every intention of staying because of the critical progress made in national security."

It is not up to Trump to remain loyal to, at all. It is up to the employee to remain loyal to the boss.
If the boss has a vision of what he wants to accomplish, then it is up to the employee to do his/her best to help the boss accomplish that vision.
In this case it is to Make America Great Again.
If the employee has another vision, then the employee should go where he/she can best accomplish their vision.
Tillerson said some thing that gained print in international media that didn't coincide whit Trump. That's just not done.
Thats not the way he does business. Let Trump be Trump, and if youre an appointee, dont plan on being there long, especially if you dont produce results.
Yes, there will be a women in charge of Homeland Security and CIA....so much for the anti-woman meme.
He was taking too much time to get things accomplished.
Well you could say that about all of them. I haven’t seen any bombshells coming out of any department.
Did he fire Goldstein today also?
Correct, but the State Department is infested with staffers of many years that are Obamites. Many of these need to go.
I almost responded to this by accident.
I don't respond to the Freeper Classes of 2004-2006 at any time.
That was the period of the "invasion of the political body snatchers," Hillary trolls who infiltrated our conservative forum, and the best if which still remain. They are good.
Not that I have heard.
I found it interesting that McMaster's South Korean counterpart -- in his announcement that KJU has asked to meet with Trump -- referred to him as, "My good friend, General McMaster"...
“....they all left when Obama left.”
Oh really? Just like all the “appointees” at the DOJ and FBI have done? I think you are sadly mistaken if you think all of them just picked up and left with the Inauguration. I will bet you that there are probably hundreds who went to work in these organizations at the behest of Obama that have stayed on to see just how much $hit they can stir up. Sally Yates Deputy AG did’t leave, she had to be fired after she was directly opposing Trump edicts. As far as “rebuilding from scratch,” that is an idea whose time has come. Just look at what Scott Pruett has done at the EPA. The last notes I saw said that he had sent 1,500 people down the road there, so it can be done! Sending 1,500 people down the road at any Federal Agency you name would get people’s attention, and it’s long overdue. Ask me if I give a flying Eff about a lot of the places the State Department has offices around the world.
How many critical laws does that violate? Such a deal is a crime at both ends. That is treason.
No elected or appointed official is immune from the penalty for treason.
There is no statute of limitations for treason.
To paraphrase...
The swamps are ugly, dark, and deep
But he has promises to keep
And miles to go before he sleeps;
and miles to go before he sleeps...
CNN has now some serious decisions to make now. Will they continue to hype a porn star (to get the Uber app we also keep getting CNN’s constant, annoying announcements re the pron star) or go with the Tillerson story? Or maybe fabricate a link between these two stories?
Each star seems to up the probability. (Remember "Stormin' Norman"?)
“Steve Goldstein, top spokesman for fired Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, himself was fired Tuesday for contradicting the official Trump administration account of Tillerson’s dismissal.” Hah, hah, hah! I can’t stop laughing. Get the he!! on board or get off the tracks.
Trump just told Steve Goldstein, "YOU'RE FIRED!" '-)

Trump doesn't hesitate to use his "two famous words"!
Now ask yourself why Trump has not fired Sessions...
Could it be that Sessions is quietly doing exactly what Trump wants -- and is doing it well?
Yes, so what I said was exactly correct — he was the current CEO and not a retiree at the time he accepted the SofS position. The impending mandatory retirement meant he had to consider his options, but it does not mean that he was already retired.
Let's fire most of them and move some diplomats to the Department of Commerce to generate foreign trade for US goods.
The old Kissinger-esque diplomacy is dead when a man of action like Trump is in power. Solid policies, real threats of trade wars, calling people out, snubbing our noses at the UN, and axing trade/global agreements not in our national interest.
Talk openly, and carry a big stick.
I was disappointed in Rex for leaving ALL the Deep State swamp snakes from Clinton, Bush, Obama admins right where they were.
Well, that was sudden. This is only a guess on my part, so bear with me - a major diplomatic engagement with North Korea is looming. It may be that the two differed enough on that issue to provoke a break. I have no evidence for this other than the timing, though.
