Rise of violent Buddhist rhetoric in Asia defies stereotypes

Buddhist mobs in Sri Lanka last week led anti-Muslim riots that left at least three dead and more than 200 Muslim-owned establishments in ruins, just the latest bout of communal violence there stoked by Buddhist nationalists.

In Myanmar, ultra-nationalist monks led by firebrand preacher Wirathu have poured vitriol on the country's small Muslim population, cheering a military crackdown forcing nearly 700,000 Rohingya into Bangladesh.

And in neighbouring Thailand, a prominent monk found himself in hot water for calling on followers to burn down mosques.

After the Taliban's destruction of the Bamiyan Buddha statues in Afghanistan ...Islam as invasive, toppling ancient Buddhist empires in Malaysia and Indonesia and now threatening the same for modern Buddhist nations through jihad or high birth rates.

People who don’t know Buddhist history think
Buddhists are total peaceniks. Inter sectarian
violence was not uncommon, particularly in Japan.

Anyway, we have seen what happens when Islam infiltrates
a nation.

When Buddhists riot, things have become pretty bad. When moslems are involved things become bad. So...

Sri Lankan Buddhists belong to the Sinhalese majority and are quite different to what you expect and find in other parts of Asia. They are hardliners and ultra Sinhala supremacists and hate all other minorities, which is what ignited the decades old civil war there.

WWII (the Pacific), Korea (Red Chinese), Vietnam (the majority of them) - all were against primarily Buddhist foes.

Vietnam in particular was driven by Vietnamese Buddhists (not just the monks, but average people) who resented being ruled by Catholic elites - to them they were as foreign as the French.
