Not always. Sometimes it sets aside an injustice as we saw in this case.
I believe that the President's pardon power was included in the Constitution in order to remedy injustices regardless of the degree of injustice. For that reason I would believe that the President would have the power to commute a sentence, reverse the findings of a federal court or a military court-martial, or even upgrade a dishonorable discharge to an honorable discharge.
The President can't change the facts of the case, but I think he has complete control over the outcome and can tailor his actions to the particular case.
My husband (USMC retired) feels the same and often said his worst assignments were aboard ship.
In addition to what Drew stated’ I don’t care if the CinC was Mickey Freaking Mouse. ALL Marines I served with were apolitical. I never heard a peep of politics when I was in and this was at a time of Clinton. Additionally you never bag the CinC and if you choose to do so you fully get what you deserve. You fully respect the chain of command and your commander in chief no matter who it is.
Thank god military is apolitical otherwise this would be a very scary place to live

Trump used Saucier’s story constantly during his campaign (comparing the situation to that of Hillary), and many people have been pleading for his release! Saucier and his mom have both been on TV, wondering why Trump wouldn’t help out now that he is in a position to do so. Trump let the poor guy serve out his entire sentence, and he’s been languishing in low paying jobs since his release months ago.
I love Trump, but he let this drag out WAY too long! I’m hopeful the pardon will help Saucier get a better job so that he can finally support his family.
If he turned himself in, they should have been more lenient, I would think.

He didn't intend to break national security laws, so he shouldn't have been prosecuted in the first place. </sarcasm>
IOW, we're either a nation of laws that applies equally to all or we aren't. Until HRC and her ilk are prosecuted and jailed for breaking national security laws, then this sailor has no business being in prison.

The article excerpt is incorrect, as the sailor already served his full sentence and was released in September 2017. You can't really commute a sentence that has already been served, so a pardon was the only redress. The pardon should also restore any veterans benefits and change the characterization of his discharge. He is no longer a felon, so his employment opportunities will be much better.
This sailor took 6 pictures that the Navy reviewed and classified Confidential, the lowest level classification. I have seen several cases like his (taking photos in a restricted area) and all were handled at NJP. At worst, this sailor should have been kicked out of the Submarine and Nuclear programs, and sent to the fleet as a conventional Machinist Mate. That would have been considered extreme.
Its a good outcome.
He served the full sentence.
The pardon means he can get better jobs than a garbage guy now, which was the only job he could get. Or do you feel his violation should exclude him from normal jobs other than the lowest possible ones ge can get, forever.
The only commutation would have been a removal of the house arrest and his teather with a forever discharge on his record. Which would exclude him from many future employment opportunities, including firearms ownership.

You seem to have missed the point of his interview, Hillary was caught doing far greater offenses but she's walking.......
As for the pics, they were of the lowest level of security, confidential, which in essence is saying "you shouldn't take pictures here. We can't explain why since nothing here is secret, but you just shouldn't"
This happened in 2009, the guy had already served his sentence in prison.
