The new owner of the Playboy Mansion has agreed to maintain the facade in its original condition under an agreement with the city of Los Angeles.
Daren Metropoulos entered into a permanent protection covenant for the 5-acre (2-hectare) property he bought for $100 million. He agreed to not demolish the 20,000-square-foot (1858-sq. meter) main residence as he proceeds with plans to connect the mansion and its grounds to his 2-acre plot next door.
The deal, announced Tuesday by Councilman Paul Koretz, will remain in effect for future owners. City News Service says the designation stops short of giving the building landmark status.
Hugh Hefner, who died last year, bought the estate in 1971 and made it into the epicenter of his Playboy brand and one of the world's most famous homes

Hydrogen peroxide is better, and safer. We have 50% hydrogen peroxide available, and we use it instead of chlorine in our swimming pool. About half a gallon a day or two in our 25,000 gallon pool. Works great. And with a little copper sulfate added to the pool the water stays clear and algae free.
Works for sanitizing hot tubs too.
We also use it, diluted to wash fresh vegetables when we bring them home from the store or in from the garden.
Many, many sanitizing uses for hydrogen peroxide when you have the good, strong stuff.
Exorcise the place, flood it with bleach and turn it into a nunnery.
Bulldoze the house to make room for a new bypass.
He ought to enshrine the spot in the grotto where Vanna was known to turn a few letters.
When was the house built and what is the surrounding neighborhood like? Just because the last occupant was disreputable doesn’t mean the house doesn’t have historic value.
