When a gunman started shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, two Miramar SWAT team members did what comes naturally: They went to help.
Now theyve been suspended for it.
The officers did not have permission to respond to the shooting at Parkland on Feb. 14, when 17 people were killed.
And that created an officer safety issue and left them unaccountable for their actions, according to their police department.
But their union reacted differently.

Fired if you don’t go in.
Fired if you do go in.
“Or, as heard in its more familiar form as the anthem of unionized gubermint workers: “not my job.””
I meant nothing like that of course.
If you run off and leave your own area unmanned, it might not turn out well.
“Frankly I think they can.
All they have to do is just jump in the cop car and turn on the ignition and lights and siren and drive...
There they are, ready to help, and in position to kill a murderer since no one else was...
Oh one other thing, they can also tell the boss when they get a chance to...”
And if they actually need these SWAT members at another scene?
WTF?
Sheesh.

So, instead of being grounded, they should get a write-up in their “permanent record”. Wow, scary stuff!
And if you do leave your “assigned post” and stop 17 children being killed, that would be considered “turn out well!” If they would have stopped it they still would have been suspended ... Broward County sort of “votes” for this kind of thing to happen, don’t they?
When seconds count, the police are only minutes...hours...away.

Oh one other thing, they can also tell the boss when they get a chance to - OKSooner
. . . then they can call them up for emergency duty - given that they were not even on duty at the time.People being paid to "control the power of the sword must never be punished for riding to the sound of the guns. Certainly not when off duty.Desperate ills are by desperate measures cured

Right, you do what has to be done, and you don’t whine about the consequences, such as being discipline by your boss.
Okay, just don’t complain about the consequences. Take what comes as a result of your decision.
The risk of a bias to action is friendly casualties. The actual result of a bias to inaction is known - well, sort of. If the foreign deputies hadnt showed up when they did and gotten medical help into the school when they did, the death toll could have doubled. The bias to inaction, as it was, may have doubled the death toll compared to riding to the sound of the guns. Worst case, an uncoordinated action could have gotten probably no more than one deputy killed, and probably no more than one or two students killed. But that is worst case thinking, had the deputies gone in who were theoretically protecting the school, the probable result would have been the saving of several lives and several nonlethal casualties as well.
I understand that any casualties due to uncoordinated deputy action would have been a scandal. The parents of a student killed as a result would be hard-pressed not to be bitter. But what of the dozen or so rifcleshots aimed deliberately at the same or only possibly different students?
The other scandal in this affair, in addition to the fact that the perp was allowed to become the monster he did, is the fact that the schools are too big. Bad things start to happen when you get more than 500 to a thousand people together in the same place.
You got it Basket!
Well, now we know that Peterson knew it was gunfire coming from inside the building, which puts a whole new light on the case.
https://hotair.com/archives/2018/03/08/radio-calls-indicate-deputy-scot-peterson-heard-shots-inside-building/Internal radio dispatches released by the sheriffs office Thursday show Peterson immediately fixated on Building 12 and even radioed that gunfire was happening inside.Act so!That certainly puts things in a different light than Sheriff Israel wanted to project!
” how they felt they had the authority to go over the heads of the Police Dept who were responsible for the area.”
What gives the Police Dept responsibility? Particularly when so many departments fail so miserably?
The “fathers of students” have a God-given responsibility to protect their children - if able. The “Police Departments” are barely able to clean up afterward.
These guys were not on-call for Miramar SWAT at the time. They were over 30 miles away which would be a 45 min-90 minute drive depending on traffic.
They may be from Broward, but were not Cowards.
They didn’t abandon their fellow SWAT team as they were not on-call at the time.
They were over 30 miles away from Miramar -a 45-90 minute drive.
