Espy became Assistant State Attorney General from 1984 to 1985, when he was elected as a Democrat to the 100th Congress in 1986 from Mississippi's 2nd congressional district.
He defeated two-term Republican Webb Franklin to become the first African-American to represent Mississippi at the federal level since Reconstruction.
He was reelected three times.
Just 20 days after taking office for his fourth term, Espy resigned after being appointed Secretary of Agriculture in the Cabinet of President Bill Clinton. He served as Secretary of Agriculture in 199394.

The November election will be a jungle election and wont have preceding primaries by party.
Considering the GOP-e and the idiots running it, I consider this in-play
Look for a Libertarian candidate to suddenly show up from no where to split the vote.
Too bad Ditch, et. al. prohibited McDaniel from winning.
Ditch is a looser....
I also just read that special elections in Mississippi are “nonpartisan”...which adds another dynamic to this to possibly allow the Democrats a way to slip through the door.
Is McDaniel still interested??
It should be a solid GOP seat now occupied by a TEA supported candidate. But the GOPe insisted on pushing that senile Thad Cochran, even to the point of getting democrats to cross over for him in the primary.
If they can’t get a Bush League Republican elected they’ll help the Democrat win.
sacrificial lamb. as long as roy moore stays in alabama, that seat is safe.
So if Espy wins, will he’ll get an award from ESPN?
I don’t think there is such thing as a “safe” seat for any Republican. I large, heavily energized Democrat base along with millions of low information voters who are influenced by pop colture and Trumos low poll numbers makes any GOP seat vulnerable.
He did do all those things.
There just wasn’t any quid pro quo established.
He was acquitted but everyone else involved took it in the neck.
Tyson Foods and Sun-Diamond were convicted of felonies and had to pay a fine for giving Espy gifts.
‘Sacrificial lamb’ reminds me of Cochran’s comment on farm animals. Anyway, that comment alone should have shown all of Mississippi Cochran was no longer viable to be a Senator. Shame on GOPe for pushing him and not allowing a fair election.
Looks like the Lt. Gov. is the best candidate. He’s younger(44). He may prefer to run for Gov. but this is more important.
The GOPe will love that democrat bastard!!
No safe seat for republicans when there is such uninspiring party leadership. Do nothings.
Thanks for adding to the story. He’s just another crony of the Clinton crime family.
The DNC has no funds. They’re basically broke compared to Rs.
The Democrats will make the race about race and the media will claim that a Republican said something racist.
