Avalanche strikes crowded Mammoth Mountain: 'Essentially, the top of the mountain came loose'

An avalanche at Mammoth Mountain early Saturday forced the closure of the popular ski area and triggered search and rescue efforts, officials said. There were no reports of serious injuries or missing people, but emergency crews were activated, officials said.{snip} "Shortly before the slide, that area was very crowded," Maynard said. "Essentially, the top of the mountain came loose in a major avalanche."{snip} "We hiked about 15 minutes to the parking lot, where local emergency mayhem had broken out," Williams said. "There were people trying to get out any way they could; some were waiting for buses, others were sharing rides and more than 100 just started skiing down Minaret Road, the main highway to the bottom of the mountain. {snip} Details of the avalanche were hard to come by throughout the day, even for residents of nearby communities that are home for the ski resort's staffers. "There was nothing on local police, fire or emergency websites," said Stephanie Cooper, who lives in the area during the winter.

“Mammoth mountain is nothing but a Mecca for liberals.”

So how will they find missing snowflakes in all that snow?

After a snow storm is THE time to go skiing. In fact, I’m in Salt Lake City now looking forward to heading up to Snowbird in a couple of hours to take advantage of the two feet of new snow that is being deposited tonight. I’ll bet an avalanche hasn’t killed or injured anyone skiing in the US within resort boundaries in decades. Skiing outside of resort boundaries is another matter, of course.

LOL - I like to play Nanny and ALWAYS second-guess people who get into trouble. It makes me feel good, like never going to McDonalds or Walmart (see tag line).

Obviously the BEST TIME to hit the slopes, as I used to do, is right after NATURAL POWDER, which is much better than the ice crystals they shoot on the slopes.

HAVE FUN!!!

A 42yo snowboarder went missing Thurs nite; called off the search because of conditions (137-146mph gusting) and found him dead Fri am. One in hospital with severe injuries and one released, from the avalanche at Squaw Fri; both within the resort - Olympic Lady chair and Squaw Creek chair.

Didn’t used to be. When our son was growing up, we went to Mammoth every Easter break. A five hour drive, but GREAT snow.

‘Essentially, the top of the mountain came loose’

Nonsensical and sensationalistic drivel from a lying liberal trash paper.

You would lose that bet.....

But in-bounds avalanches with fatalities are pretty rare, due to avalanche control work within resorts (and keeping the more dangerous sectors closed until sufficient control work has been done).....

True, but if you were in the path of millions of tons of snow and ice you might think that the whole mountain came loose..... it might be your last thought.
