Georgia's lieutenant governor on Monday attacked Delta Airlines for dropping a partnership with the National Rifle Association, pledging to block any legislation that includes tax benefits for the airline.
Delta, which is headquartered in Atlanta, ended a discount program for NRA members on Saturday after public backlash following a recent high school shooting in Parkland, Florida.
"Delta is reaching out to the National Rifle Association to let it know we will be ending its contract for discounted rates through our group travel program," Delta said in a statement. "We will be requesting that the NRA remove our information from its website."
In response, Georgia Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle who is running for governor as a Republican this year tweeted that he would block any legislation until Delta renews the partnership.
"I will kill any tax legislation that benefits @Delta unless the company changes its position and fully reinstates its relationship with @NRA," Cagle said Monday. "Corporations cannot attack conservatives and expect us not to fight back."
The Georgia legislature is considering a bill that includes a provision to exempt Delta's purchases of jet fuel from the state sales tax, a move that could potentially save the airline around $40 million.
Several other Georgia GOP lawmakers suggested they would not support the tax change until Delta reversed its decision.
Delta attempted to clarify over the weekend that the decision was nonpartisan, painting it as simply a way to stay out of the debate over guns.
"Delta's decision reflects the airline's neutral status in the current national debate over gun control amid recent school shootings," Delta's statement said. "Out of respect for our customers and employees on both sides, Delta has taken this action to refrain from entering this debate and focus on its business. Delta continues to support

Hard ball.
thanks for the heads up.
folks, Georgia Girl 2 says this guy is a POSER. Probably a RINO.
Exactly on the sweetheart deals. Delta should be paying the tax no matter what.
As for the retaliation against Delta for making a simpering gesture to the student activists, that does not bother me so much. The power to remove tax implies the power to re-impose it for any reason.
Sounds good.
this is personal, now lets get personal Georgia vote her a## out!
this is personal, now lets get personal Georgia vote her a## out! oooops! I misread so sorry!
Then don't fly Delta. But if you use the office of the governor to retaliate against a company because you don't agree with their perfectly legal business decision then the courts would have a field day.
“Sounds like a plan. Im sure there are other airlines that would love to fill the Hub left open when Delta gets kicked out”
Or just open up another Atlanta-area airport to Commercial Traffic, such as DeKalb, or Cobb County. Even Fulton Co.
Delta has lobbied HARD against that for decades, because it is a threat to their stranglehold on ATL.
Open another ATL airport, and just watch how fast Southwest or the independents come running.
Payback comes in many forms.
Besides losing a fairly large tax break on fuel, how many passengers ill they lose for this behavior?
Actually, that should be,
“I will immediately bring forward legislation to open up Cobb County Airport, Dekalb, and Fulton County airports, to scheduled commercial traffic, which is BANNED by legislation now.”
That LAST thing Delta wants, and has fought for years to prevent, is another Midway or Houston Hobby in their own back yard.
Sounds like Delta has ZERO LEVERAGE.
There appears to be a price for supporting the overthrow of the Constitution in conservative Georgia.
Make no mistake, repealing the 2nd Amendment is the breach that brings down the Republic.

Holy crap! They did it!!!!
Dang!! That was fast!!
Woo hoo, GA!
Exactly!!
Now lets see what Delta thinks/does...since GA has stood up to them.
Amazed!
did you like it when the IRS was used to go after the Tea party. I did not.
Bttt.

The tactic should be used against Democrats as hard and as fast as possible in order to get them screaming that this needs to be banned by law and shudder at the thought of weapon eyes government ever appearing again.
Thanks blam.
