Politics then grants immunity from scrutiny. If New Orleans or Memphis shows signs of massive fraud or theft, no cabinet secretary in a democrat administration is going to allow an audit team within a hundred miles of the region. There are about twenty or so audit teams. They spot audit unannounced, trade schools, universities, charter schools, and rarely public primary schools.
Just recently surprising enough they have begun to audit the schools that had been protected for decades. Newark, Memphis, Chicago, New Orleans, Los Angeles, etc....

Actually it was Jimmy Carter. It just took unfettered democrat corruption of to grow the schemes to their fullest potential Obama style.
Much like the FBI has become a corrupt snake rotting at the head, so too has the US Department of Education. It basically gives free money to fund entrenched educator activists who skim 50% for socialist programs they appoint themselves executive president of and the other 50% goes to stupid young adults who use it to pay for spring breaks, new apartments and furniture, automobiles, computers, smart phones, and a little that's left on tuition.
What could possibly go wrong with that?

Yes, two of my kids took out student loans years and years ago and they are still paying but the “cost” of the loans keep increasing.
Pretty soon they will disappear into the great underground of other student loan holders...impoverished, on the lam, hungry. Both are very well educated but older than 55. Tough s**t.
They know they can come home. Thank god for that....but ignomy of it all may preclue such a debasement in their own minds. Sigh.

What can they actually audit at the college/university level?
If you call or write to the Dept of Education to complain, they tell you that if you borrowed money you have to pay it back no matter what. If you complain about College Work Study, they tell you that the school isn’t legally required to offer you a job - just to consider hiring you. If you can’t find a staff member to hire you, that’s tough luck for you.
Do any of these auditors contact university staff members to see why they have apparent job openings but can’t find anyone to fill them?
They mainly audit for the ghost students and proof they are attending and actively enrolled in the schools. You would be amazed.
