I won't flame you. I can understand your concerns. I feel similarly about the youth voting. But this is a slippery slope. Pick an age, any age you want, and use it consistently as the age of consent, the voting age, the military recruitment age, the firearm possession age, the off-dad's-insurance age, etc, etc, etc and I could support it. But this "feel good" legislating is just the slippery slope to gun(owner) control and the end of the 2nd Amendment. Did we have this problem before Bush signed the Gun-Free School Zones Act of 1990? I don't think we did. I think there are many common sense measures to try before eroding our Constitutional freedoms. For instance, how about we let school staff defend themselves and the children entrusted to their care once again? That would be a good start.

You are absolutely correct. First, we need to find some way to change the debate from gun control to school safety. Then we need to consider that there are over 100,000 schools in the United States.

Given the numbers involved, an average of 5 guards per school at an average pay of $50,000 would cost twenty five billion dollars per year. This would be on ongoing cost, year after year. We don't need another costly federal mandate passed in the heat of passion.

For semi-automatic weapons, Trump wants the mandatory age to be 21. Age limit doesn’t apply to other guns.

Most guns are semi-automatic, including rifles, shotguns and pistols. I even have a S&W revolver which fires every time I pull the trigger. Is that a semi-automatic?

The semi-automatic technology has been around since at least 1885.

We also have a problem where the medical diagnosis for mental incompetence and danger to society is far broader than the legal definition, which allows far too many mentally ill people to purchase guns.

I would want to see more mental health facilities. All we did in the 70s and 80s was shift the cost of mental healthcare to the prison system.

Interesting that statistics for 2015 showed 3,477 people were killed, and 391,000 were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers. Most of these were related to texting or talking while driving. Should we ban cell phones or at least cell phone use by persons under age 21.
