About bullets fired straight up killing people when they came down= BS. Fired “artillery style” yes someone could get hurt or killed.
I agree with every word you said.
We're not all useless, I don't think. Some of us do still teach children and would give our lives protecting them if such a situation arose. Some of us are already CHL holders, myself included, and would not be afraid to use a gun to stop a killer. Plenty of my coworkers are retired military; I am fully confident that they could handle being among the designated armed personnel, if given the opportunity. Please don't paint all educators with such a broad brush; FReepers do that all the time and it gets pretty tiresome. There are more conservative teachers than you realize. You're welcome, by the way...I'm proud to do the job I do, thankless though it usually is.
I can’t judge him, having never been under fire myself. I hope if i ever am, that I’ll act the man, even if I’m pissing my pants, but you can never know ‘til it’s on. Since he did show the yellow feather, he’s wise to have quit. Some people just aren’t made to do that. Others never know they’re heroes until the time comes.
Whatever the guy was/is, the attack is cheap and the irony is that for all we know the Sheriff using him as a scapegoat might be the same sort of coward....
Yes indeed. Give the cowards more publicity so other people will get the idea that it’s OK to hide when the shooting starts. In war, they shoot people for that.
What is wrong with you, Dirtysecret? Do you not get that these people feed off the notoriety they get from killing? Every time something like this happens, the fame and glory go on for weeks, in the Lamestream media and social media and instead of these killers being thrown off a gallows scaffolding with a noose, or lined up against a wall, they get glorified as heroes.
You’re part of the problem when you “want photos!”
If the cop had just fired his gun randomly into air it would have distracted the perp and maybe saved a few kids.
Today this could be Charlton Hestons beautiful answer to CNN and their slimey ilk.
The terminal velocity of most falling bullets is about 300 feet per second (or 204 miles per hour). After reaching that velocity they will cease accelerating and continue falling at that speed until they hit the earth. In addition, a bullet fired straight into the air does not fall nose first; rather it shifts onto its side and wobbles on its downward journey.
Three hundred feet per second is much shower than the velocity of a bullet leaving the muzzle of a gunwhich is usually anywhere between 800 and 4,000 plus feet per second. Accordingly, a bullet falling straight down typically does not have sufficient energy to kill or seriously injury someone.
Unfortunately neither Pompey or Tom Doniphon were there for back up.
Your own words.
YES
I've seen this asserted repeatedly. Nonsense. That was the man's DUTY. He was armed in a gun-free zone to do his damn duty. He failed his duty just as if a soldier in a "hot" zone recoiled and hid behind a stone and let his brothers do the dirty work. Very simple here: they take the job, obligation and salary - do your work.
Very simple to those of us faced or not faced with a 'real situation'. I don't get paid and am not armed to be someone's security detail. If I was and recoiled then I failed my duty. End of story.
“There are more conservative teachers than you realize.”
Perhaps but if you were in a majority, our education system would be in MUCH better shape.
I’ve taught in Texas and California and Tennessee, and sadly, the vast majority of teachers in all those states were liberals. I blame the teacher education in the colleges - even in Texas, where I got my first certificate/credential, the education department at A&M was overwhelmingly disgustingly liberal and the students were just lapping it up.
Yes, I paint the education system with a broad brush. And I know that has to be frustrating for you. BUT I am looking at the general picture of the decline in education and in how I wouldn’t trust the majority of teachers to even teach, much less handle a weapon. I realize you are a the whim of your liberal administrators - but I’ve always contended that anyone doing a job that is impossible will move on unless they have a pension. That’s the beauty of teaching in Texas that I saw - our realtor was a former teacher and was making money hand over fist selling like crazy.
Anyway, yes I lump the entire failing education system together. You, being in the minority, just get glossed over. But - would you want every teacher in your school to be armed? Do you trust them?
“Have you ever served in the military?”
10 years
What branch of service? Did you serve in a combat zone? Have you ever been shot at?
“Code of Conduct
for
Members of the United States Armed Forces”
When I was in SERE school they spent a full half day on the Code of Conduct and encouraged us all to follow it to the best of our abilities. Insisted even.
Then they set about to cause every man to violate it. And succeeded.
When I underwent SERE training prior to going to Vietnam, we only had a few who were broken. I wasn't one of them.
