Mediocre 4 year private colleges have priced themselves out. These schools paying/going into debt is a negative Return on Investment. Now is the time for all these big bucks so-called conservatives or libertarians, looking at you Koch brothers, to buy up these schools and hire brilliant conservative scholars who have been blackballed from the elite schools. The Jews and Catholics did this with now well regarded schools like Brandeis and Notre Dame.

I agree with you. We would also give a more meaningful education.

Now we find out who is the grasshopper. And who is the ant.

Free money from the government cannot last forever.

One of the annoying this about journalism, in my opinion, is the assumption that things “should” always remain the same, and that it’s “news” if they don’t.

There are also many smaller conservative or religion based schools which are much stronger...they might be able upgrade their campuses at a fraction of the cost of building their own...hopefully many state owned state colleges will go banckrupt and the liberal stranglehold on higher ed will be broken.

So many universities have devolved into awarding pointless fluff degrees with no market value that they should be branded diploma mills and sued for fraudulent misrepresentation. They certainly shouldn’t be eligible for financial aid or loans for such degrees, when there’s no real hope of future income sufficient to repay the loan.

There’s no real comparison between the two schools. Concord has about 2,000 students. It has never had much more than that. WV has never exceeded two million in population. Colleges were built during the time when typography in the state made travel difficult. After the construction of the interstates, it’s improved but some areas are still isolated.

And they’ve not yet felt the impact of online education.

“At Clemson University, the Journal found, graduates on average earn $50,000 a year 10 years after entering college and the default rate on student loans is 3%; the average Concord graduate earned $32,000 and the default rate is 15%.”

If these figures are accurate then the situation is even worse than I thought. Ten years after entering college means on the verge of thirty, adjusted for inflation even the Clemson average is nowhere near what I was earning at the same age WITHOUT a degree.

Many of these schools expanded rapidly during the Vietnam War, when many people headed to college only to avoid the draft. It has been a slow death spiral for many since then, compounded by many other factors including open borders. Who is going to spend four years and tens (if not hundreds) of thousands of dollars on a degree just to watch an employer hire an imported Asian instead?

Dream Center Foundation/Dream Center Churches have bought and turned to non-profit the formerly for-profit South University, Argosy University, Western State College of Law and a dozen of Art Institutes.

It will be interesting to see how these colleges adapt under Fundamentalist Christian leadership. The IT classes at Art Institute of Atlanta are top tier in reaching and educating students who are above average in the 70th and 80th percentile but not the 90th percentile.

I have a soft spot for them as Aimee Semple-McPherson, the founder of what is now called Dream Center, was the idol/role model for my mom.

Some of those “diploma mills” are designed for teachers’ union members, where additional degrees automatically bump up salaries tens of thousands of dollars per year. In the end, the taxpayer gets screwed by the scheme; the “teacher” recovers the investment of money quickly, and no time at all was invested.

It was during this period that many new law schools were established, for the same purpose.

We have one school here in north Jersey that is circling the drain after a Vietnam-era expansion; it sold one of its campuses, and years ago when I was looking at schools the only people I know who attended were those who couldn’t get into state schools. They’d go there for a year or two, then transfer into a state school at that point.

Seems many of these are just jobs programs for ghetto folk now; education isn’t even in the picture.

And the worst insult of all is hiring an affirmative action African in place of a more qualified and competent worker. Blatant and insulting racist hiring practices.

The college is dying like the rest of West Virginia. Obama killed West Virginia as premeditated murder.

Clemson is technical school polluted by the left. South carolina has BMW and Mercedes.

All of these small town private liberal colleges destroyed themselves by including politically correct liberal studies programs which increased costs significantly. More professors
and more benefits to professors increased tuition.

Best bet for these type of schools is to get rid of every liberal program they have, get rid of every liberal professor, hire good professors without an agenda and add a life skills curriculum as a minor.

Kids are leaving college without skills to function in the real world. Give a kid a business degree with a life skills minor and he/she will be very competitive.
