One of the advantages of the four-quadrant gates you describe is that under Federal Railroad Administration regulations, they are one of the key elements of a grade crossing where the trains aren’t required to sound their horns. Towns with a lot of late-night train activity are pushing them because they don’t like the horn noise.

That was how it was sold here.

Now, admittedly, the blow post for the south crossing was DIRECTLY outside our bedroom window, so you could say I had a dog in that fight. But after a few weeks, we slept right through it - even in mild weather with the windows open!

Took awhile to get used to NOT hearing the horn after they installed the new crossing!
