I think the interjection of sex into science fiction stories usually does nothing to benefit the plot, and serves mostly as a lurid distraction.

Nowadays people are dead set intent on interjecting homosexuality into a lot of science fiction plots, as well as other social justice warrior crap.

Some character's race, sexual orientation, or religion usually has no bearing on the character's role in a story, but for some reason people insist on putting a focus on this stuff.
