Rep. Carlos Curbelo (R-Fla.), who filed legislation banning bump stocks which allows gun owners to turn semi-automatic weapons into automatic weapons, told Fox News Americas Newsroom on Tuesday that he supports raising the minimum age to buy semi-automatic weapons, like the one used in the Florida school shooting.
I also support raising the minimum age. If an 18-year-old, a 19-year-old cant buy a handgun oh, and by the way, they also cant buy a beer at a restaurant why can they buy these powerful long guns that are capable of inflicting so much damage as we saw at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas last week? Curbelo asked.
Curbelo, who considers himself a strong supporter of the 2nd Amendment, said Congress needs to strengthen 2nd Amendment rights for responsible gun owners, but we clearly have to do more to make sure guns stay out of the hands of those who want to harm innocent people.
So theres some very obvious steps that we can take. Im supporting universal background check legislation to make sure every gun transfer is run through the NICS, the background check system, he said.
Curbelo noted that Rep. Stephanie Murphy (D-Fla.) has a bill to allow the CDC to research gun violence in the context of public health.

It may make us feel good, but pulling in the draft age and also the voting age wont fly. We have to keep on topic, but we should be pulling in what we want too (such as armed schools).
>
On topic? IMO, that’s the whole point of this no: the ‘age of responsibility’.
Having the numbers jump around depending on action is asinine.
- Old enough to join armed forces, but not own in ‘private life’
- Old enough to (attempt to) vote away the Rights of others
- Have an abortion, but not surgury
- Drive a car (much HIGHER chance of killing someone else, if not self) [IMO, this also has a ‘max age’...slower reflexes, aging sight, etc.])
If it weren’t for hypocrisy, politics just wouldn’t be the same :P
Shootee turned 19 last September. Too old and past history unstable to be in class with 16 year olds
Sorry, boys and girls. What we have here is a heart problem, not a gun problem - a problem with its secular origins in the Progressives of the early 20th century, the "Great Society" of 1964, and every other statist solution.
“Curbelo is the son of Cuban exiles in Florida. (So he’s a Cuban puto!)
In March 2016, Curbelo said he would not vote for Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election, calling it “a moral decision” rather than a political decision. He did not attend the 2016 Republican National Convention. In October 2016, speaking about the upcoming presidential election, he said: “I’m not supporting any of the two major candidates. I’m as disappointed with this election as most Americans are.”
In February 2017, while serving on the Ways and Means Committee, he voted against a measure that would have led to a request of the Treasury Department for Trump’s tax returns. He then voted against a resolution that would have directed the House to request 10 years of Trump’s tax returns, which would then have been reviewed by the House Ways and Means Committee in a closed session.
Quartz included Curbelo on a list of Republicans opposing Trump’s 2017 executive order to impose a temporary ban on entry to the U.S. of people from seven Muslim-majority countries. Curbelo said at the time: “I expect that these executive orders are in fact temporary and that once the Administration strengthens the vetting process, we can continue our tradition of welcoming those who are persecuted, in an orderly manner and without any kind of religious test.” He said the executive orders “were hastily issued & need a lot of work.”
And yet he’s allowed to run as a Republican!
I'm tired of them. We won, they lost. They need to get to the back of the bus and shut up. Besides, those “crumbs” turn in to incremental erosion of our rights.
Today's reminder that the Army feels that 18-year-olds can be trained to be trusted with more powerful "powerful long guns" than that.
I'll look in my Magic 8-Ball to see if he would be in favor of a compromise bill that mandates Army-level training for 18-21 year olds. I wonder what the answer could be.
Republican Congressman Calls for Raising Minimum Age to Buy AR-15s [Carlos Curbelo]
Yes, because the killers mental health would have been so much better at 21 then it was at 19!
I've been saying this for years. I might actually be okay if we raised the age of adulthood to 21, but voting age needs to go to 21 too.
Yep. You can die for your country at 18, but you can’t buy a hand gun or a drink. As far as I am concerned, at 18, you are an adult and should be treated that way. If you can vote at 18, then you should have all the rights and responsibilities of any other citizen.
Part of the infantilization of America. Most Americans don't go to college at 18. They go into the work force. If an 18 year old can be drafted into the military, they should have the right to vote on the politicians who set public policy.
This infantization uses the same rationale that Obamacare had when it allowed "children" to stay on their family's policy until they turned age 26.
Possibly owning stock in an AK manufacturer ?
along with a corresponding increase of the voting age??
I was trained to load nuclear weapons on U.S. Navy aircraft at 19.
Agree! The hypocrisy of these varying ages of responsibility is astounding.
I say make it the same age of adulthood for voting, military, guns, drinking, surgery. Between 14 and that age, must be with an adult if with a gun. Driving at 16...
I believe that in todays America, the age of intellectual maturity is higher than a century ago. 21 now is like 18 then, to me.
Unlikely that the FBI would have “followed protocol” no matter what. And being undiagnosed as mentally ill, no Baker Act invocation either.
That ship has sailed. In the olden days, most kids were off their parents teat by 18 years old. Now it’s more like 25, but since 21 seems to be the “consensus” age for adult activities (drinking, smoking, etc), why not set that as the age of adulthood? At least it’ll reduce the number of liberal kids voting.
With the possible exception going to those serving in the Armed Forces, where the age of adulthood would be 18.
Most still are. What is true is that more young people are living with their parents than their partners. For First Time In 130 Years, More Young Adults Live With Parents Than With Partners
Pew notes that this is not a record high percentage for the number of young people living at home in 1940, for instance, approximately 35 percent of people in that age range lived at home.
The ship that has sailed is the change of the voting age from 21 to 18. There is no way that gets reversed. The 26th Amendment to the Constitution will not be repealed.
At least itll reduce the number of liberal kids voting.
By 2019, next year, half of the children 18 and under will be minorities. The majority of children under one are now minorities. Each cohort that turns 18 every year is composed of a higher percentage of minorities. By 2043 non-Hispanic whites will be 50% of the population, compared to 63% today, and 89% in 1970. So it really doesn't matter whether the age to vote is 18 or 21, the majority of them will be voting Dem.
