A petition on the White House website started on Friday to call on the President to give a JROTC Cadet who died in the Marjory Douglas Stoneman High School shooting a full honors military burial.
Cadet Peter Wang, 15, did everything in his power to help other students make it out of the mass shooting alive. Now, people want to honor his memory by giving him the credit he deserves.
Here's what the petition is asking for:
Peter Wang, 15, was one of the students killed in Florida this past week. He was a Jrotc Cadet who was last seen, in uniform, holding doors open and thus allowing other students, teachers, and staff to flee to safety. Wang was killed in the process. His selfless and heroic actions have led to the survival of dozens in the area. Wang died a hero, and deserves to be treated as such, and deserves a full honors military burial.
Wang and a number of other JROTC students hid between 60 and 70 students under Kevlar blankets to keep them from being shot.
According to Lin Chen, Wangs 24-year-old cousin, the teenager was a caring individual who was always smiling.
"He is so brave. He is the person who is genuinely kind to everyone. He doesnt care about popularity. He always liked to cheer people up. He is like the big brother everyone wished they had," Chen told the Sun-Sentinel.
Jesse Pan, a local real estate agent and family friend, said Wang was very polite, smart and he dreamed of attending West Point Military Academy to be of service to our country," Pan told the Sun-Sentinel.
Someone also created a Reddit post that has received attention from Military members across the country. The post asks for volunteers to show up to the funeral in their Military uniform to pay tribute to Wong. Those who are unable to attend are sending coins and patches to the family.
Wang's funeral services will take place on Tues. Feb. 20 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Kraeer Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 1655 N. University Dr. Coral Springs, FL 33701
Absolutely.
Let’s hope there’s a proper turn out for his services RIP CADET
This caught my eye. Is it common schools now have kevlar blankets? Had they trained for a shooting?
If they boy was even wearing a JROTC uniform, he should be given this honor.
Parents are Mandarin speakers who have a restaurant close to the school. They need translation but apparently know many staff from the school who eat in the restaurant.
Great idea...but tell the screamin’ La Raza lezzie Emma Gonzalez to stay far away.
How does one find the link to the petition?
I just signed it.
Click on the underscored petition in the initial post.
Did it. Hope it works.
RIP Cadet Wang.
Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
God bless this wonderful young man and give him the credit he deserves. He was a shining example of how to act......in life and now death. Breaks my heart to see him and know this story.........;(

YES!!!!!
I read yesterday that the Kevlar blankets were part of a $10,000 grant from the NRA to the school’s JrROTC program to buy items for its marksmanship course. The JrROTC teaches marksmanship using air rifles, thus I suspect the Kevlar blankets were related to that, perhaps for lining the sides of the shooting range.
I realize he was only 15, but he upheld the highest principles of service to his fellow citizens. If possible, I hope he could be given an honorary posthumous commission as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army.
Garryowen son! #AmericanHero
If our nation had a majority of students like him we would be in much better shape concerning the future. Enjoy heaven kiddo but we lost a gem here.
Some schools have them on hand for tornado protection.
Wow, what a great kid and hero. Kids like this turn into fantastic men who keep our nation strong and safe. What a loss. Brings tears to my eyes. I hope the family is consoled a little bit by the outpouring of gratitude and wishes.
