The Motives Behind the Massacre
Townhall.com ^ | February 16, 2018 | Pat Buchanan

"Enough is enough!" "This can't go on!" "This has to stop!"

These were among the comments that came through the blizzard of commentary after the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Broward County. We have heard these words before.

Unfortunately, such atrocities are not going to stop. For the ingredients that produce such slaughters are present and abundant in American society.

And what can stop a man full of hate, who has ceased to care about his life and is willing to end it, from getting a weapon in a country of 300 million guns and killing as many as he can in a public place before the police arrive?

An act of "absolute pure evil," said Gov. Rick Scott, of the atrocity that took 17 lives and left a dozen more wounded. And evil is the right word.

While this massacre may be a product of mental illness, it is surely a product of moral depravity. For this was premeditated and plotted, done in copycat style to the mass killings to which this country has become all too accustomed.

Nikolas Cruz thought this through. He knew it was Valentine's Day. He brought his fully loaded AR-15 with extra magazines and smoke grenades to the school that had expelled him. He set off a fire alarm, knowing it would bring students rushing into crowded halls where they would be easy to kill. He then escaped by mixing in with fleeing students.

The first ingredient then was an icy indifference toward human life and a willingness to slaughter former fellow students to deliver payback for whatever it was Cruz believed had been done to him at Douglas High.

In his case, the conscience was dead, or was buried beneath hatred, rage or resentment at those succeeding where he had failed. He had been rejected, cast aside, expelled. This would be his revenge, and it would be something for Douglas High and the nation to see -- and never forget.

Indeed, it seems a common denominator of the atrocities to which we have been witness in recent years is that the perpetrators are nobodies who wish to die as somebodies.

If a sense of grievance against those perceived to have injured them is the goad that drives misfits like Cruz to mass murder, the magnet that draws them to it is infamy. Infamy is their shortcut to immortality.

From the killings in Columbine to Dylann Roof's murder of black parishioners at the Charleston Church, from the Pulse nightclub massacre in Orlando to the slaughter of first-graders in Newtown, to Las Vegas last October where Stephen Paddock, firing from an upper floor of the Mandalay Bay, shot dead 58 people and wounded hundreds at a country music festival -- these atrocities enter the social and cultural history of the nation. And those who carry them out achieve a recognition few Americans ever know. Charles Whitman, shooting 47 people from that Texas tower in 1966, is the original model.

Evil has its own hierarchy of rewards. Perhaps the most famous man of the 20th century was Hitler, with Stalin and Mao among his leading rivals.

Some of these individuals who seek to "go out" this way take their own lives when the responders arrive, or they commit "suicide by cop" and end their lives in a shootout. Others, Cruz among them, prefer to star in court, so the world can see who they are. And the commentators and TV cameras will again give them what they crave: massive publicity.

And we can't change this. As soon as the story broke, the cameras came running, and we watched another staging of the familiar drama -- the patrol cars, cops in body armor, ambulances, students running in panic or walking in line, talking TV heads demanding to know why the cowards in Congress won't vote to outlaw AR-15s.

Yet, among the reasons gun-owners prize the AR-15 is that, not only in movies and TV shows is it the hero's -- and the villain's -- weapon of choice, but in real life, these are the kinds of rifles carried by the America's most-admired warriors.

They are the modern version of muskets over the fireplace.

Another factor helps to explain what happened Wednesday: We are a formerly Christian society in an advanced state of decomposition.

Nikolas Cruz was a product of broken families. He was adopted. Both adoptive parents had died. Where did he get his ideas of right and wrong, good and evil? Before the Death of God and repeal of the Ten Commandments, in those dark old days, the 1950s, atrocities common now were almost nonexistent.

One imagines Nikolas sitting alone, watching coverage of the Las Vegas shooting, and thinking, "Why not? What have I got to lose? If this life is so miserable and unlikely to get better, why not go out, spectacularly, like that? If I did, they would remember who I was and what I did for the rest of their lives."

And, so, regrettably, we shall.

They all had guns too, and were all mammals and I bet carbon based life forms. I hope you see that argument doesn’t carry water. Correlation does not equate to causation. If people returned to self medication it would be worse. To blame anything other than the wickedness of man is a fallacy.

Mankind is inherently evil. Ever since Cain murdered his brother, this has been going on. Insteaded of stones, we now use high powered weapons easily attainable with a government background check. If you have the cash, it’s yours.

The answer is two fold. First schools need to become prisons where armed guards and medical detectors will be the norm. Teachers and onsite administrators must be trained in firearms usage for the protection anything else is gross negligence.

Second, the Constitution must be changed to reflect today’s problems in the manner our Government works. The federal level must be reformed without federal interference. Most importantly, access to assault style weapons must be eliminated. If it means house to house confiscation, then be ready for a revolution, because that’s what will happen when this is attempted.

Also in this mess, is the media’s responsibility and their full throttled 24/7 coverage must be taxed. Both TV and newsprint must pay a tax for their pollution of our environment and minds.

“Kids that are expelled should be put in reform school until they are deemed safe to go back to normal schools.”

Now, these same kids are placed under the protection of many state and Federal laws (discrimination protection) that do not allow the imposition of any discipline to speak of and placed back into the classroom.

I am thinking that this will change.

Why is this horror happening in schools? Because the Leftist educational system is at war with men, particularly white men.. They have marginalized them into nothingness.

Well said and so right. Cruz told authorities that he heard demons in his head telling him to do the shooting. That is a symptom of schizophrenia. This very real disease of the brain manifests usually from the mid teens through the early 20s. The majority of schizophrenics are male.

A secondary but extremely important cause of these kinds of psychotic breaks is the over use of powerful psychotropic drugs, primarily in young boys.

Will Durant, a famous secular humanist author, wrote that it would be difficult for humanists "to mold a natural ethic strong enough to maintain moral restraint and social order without the support of supernatural consolations, hopes, and fears."

And often put on prescription drugs that exacerbates the problem.

Problem is, we try to apply our normal person worldview, morals, and framework to understand these horrible tragedies.

We cannot possibly understand the perp unless we reverse our worldview.

My current theory is that evil underpins all of these killings. The twisted perp may conclude their is an incentive to perform the killings. The perp may actually believe he is helping his fellow man and community by killing people.

This is the same justification used by Communists, Facists, Marxist and your run of the mill progressive.

Progressive explanation to support another wacked out policy initiative. “Trust me, this will work out so well, you will be so happy and thank me later. All you need to do is give 80% of your wages to those folks over there, and 10 % to me!?

The fact is, there is some severe mental illness out there effecting thousands of people and we will never be able to predict when one of them snaps and drives a car thru people, or knifes someone, or burns down a building, or tortures an animal etc.

The bad thing about teachers being armed is their are some students who believe it is their God given duty in life to push the teacher over the edge.

I remember one such teacher and he was pushed over the edge by a student in another class. Teacher got fired.

Otherwise I am in favor of stable teachers being armed.

“Infamy is their shortcut to immortality.”

In the mind of a mentally ill person, they might not be counting on infamy, but may expect notoriety, and perhaps even adulation or some kind of sainthood. And what might lead them to expect that kind of recognition for their hideous act?

Well just how many times have we seen some young person use their rage to justify a violent attack, and then after getting killed by a police officer, a guard, or even an armed citizen, they not only have the activists and extreme leftists giving them candlelight vigils and sending out social media memes that practically canonize those murderers, putting halos behind their heads - but that insanity gets echoed by the highest levels of Democrat leadership, including a Democrat president that symbolically adopts the deranged youth by imagining he could be his own son.

Sure, that’s never happened for school shootings, but let’s not expect these lunatics to make that distinction. And even after such shootings, the villain is always the gun and gun supporters, not the evildoer himself, who at least gets pitied by the anti-gun left, conferring on him a type of victim status, which among leftists is the next best thing, and perhaps even a rung on the ladder, to sainthood.

So it should be no surprise when desperately mentally ill youths, who cannot see themselves achieving recognition in a career, in academics, in sports, or even in social gatherings, then try to immortalize themselves in a desperate, homicidal act, believing in their deranged - but not too far from reality, thanks to the left minds that it may win them the recognition that they desperately seek.

It has become the American left’s equivalent of a terrorist Imam who tells his young, suicide bomber recruits that they’ll receive 72 virgins in the afterlife. Act on your rage, go out and slaughter innocent people, and if you get killed you just might become one of our saints.

Go to any Facebook page or comments section and find where someone offers up prayers for the victims of shootings. The vile atheists are on them immediately.

That kid in the 1998 murder of his parents in Huntsville, Alabama....had like ten times the amount of Ritalin that normal kid ought to have in his system.

If one fails to take prescription medicines as labeled and as instructed that is the fault of that person to comply with instructions for safe use of the medication, not a problem with the medication itself.

By your logic you would outlaw fire because fire burns down buildings when not controlled.

A spark plug (controlled fire) ignites fuel in a car's cylinder chamber (controlled environment) and this propels a car. Some asshole comes along and thinks he can propel his car by splashing gas all over the car and lighting a match. The car bursts into flame and goes no where.

Your pat answer applied to this illustration would be to outlaw fire - maybe outlaw gasoline too and then crawl back into a padded cell somewhere and congratulate yourself for making the world safer for children or something.
