President Donald Trump is reportedly open to raising the federal tax on gasoline and diesel by 25 cents to pay for the White House's infrastructure plan.
The current taxes, which have not been raised in nearly 25 years, are 18.4 cents per gallon for gasoline and 24.4 cents for diesel.
At least some Republican lawmakers and many conservative groups are opposed to hiking the federal fuel levy.

How much Federal Tax is charged now? And exactly how is it spent?? I always thought (silly me) the federal tax went for the repair and general upkeep of federal highways and bridges.
Our slutty mayor in Nashville is trying to build a train system for a mere 9 billion dollars, hoping for Federal money.
How about pulling our troops out of Syria and using the billions of dollars saved thereby to pay for roads?
Or is occupying another Middle East nation more important than our debt & tax levels?
I'm indifferent. I doubt that I've put more than a hundred miles on my vehicles in the past four months, or over 500 miles in the past year.
Come again? “Plutocrats like us?” Speak for yourself, and you can shove the class warfare where the Sun doesn’t shine.
I am not an expert. I think the gas tax goes to the Transportation department and is included as funding in transportation spending, but it doesn’t nearly cover the cost of keeping up the nation’s roads, much less modernizing them.
It wont be used for roads during the Trump admin. It goes straight into the general fund now. They spend it on whatever they want.
Ok, Plutocrats like me.
eliminate the federal gas tax & fully privatize all the interstates
costs will plummet & quality increase
Better yet, just shutter a single, useless federal agency. Maybe even two.
Is there not even an accounting gimmick to show the amount coming in and how much the Transportation Department spends funding state and federal highways?
Fake news.
Add the words on imported oil only, and I’m okay with it.
I’m fine with use taxes. Income and property taxes, not so much. If you use the roads, you should pay to maintain them.
Good point. Moreover, the $0.25 tax will also jack up the transportation prices of goods (as other Freepers pointed out).
I haven’t read any of the comments but how many “art of the deal”, “he’s fooling the press”, “he’s laying a trap for the Dems” comments?
He’s a NY liberal in more way then many here like to admit.
Beat me to it.
Its political suicide in a midterm period .
He should kill the idea .
