The chief of staff to Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin altered an email and made false statements so that taxpayers would foot the bill for the secretary’s wife on a luxury, 10-day trip to Europe last summer, according to the agency’s inspector general.
Vivieca Wright Simpson, the VA’s third-most senior official, doctored language in an email from another aide who was planning the trip to make it look like Shulkin was getting an award from the Danish government.

At the time that it was announced that Trump was holding him over and appointing him as head of the VA, I thought it was not a good move. Anyone who had been in the administration of that mess in the past would hardly be likely to be the person to redeem it. Seems like that is proving itself.
When the person next up to run the VA is selected - make sure it is someone who recognizes that the task of the VA can be separated into two groups - veterans with the typical array of health issues not unique to their service, and veterans with very difficult injuries that occurred in service - which need extensive, specialized care. Give the first group a version of Medicare Advantage (or its equivalent) with no copays, no deductibles, and let them get care in the private sector. For the second group - create specialized care facilities, make them leading edge, and skip the post office-like bureaucracy, sloth and sloppiness. If their mission is trimmed down to the folks with the exceptional care needs that are a direct result of their service - they can do that well.

A 10 day trip for 3 1/2 days of meetings, because...jet lag, and everything in Europe is SO far apart! It sounds like the wife used staff to arrange the sightseeing because they had to know anyway due to security. Riiight. Hey lady, stay there an extra week on your own dime.

The bureaucrats at the VA will fight a Veteran to the death over a nickel.

Woke up the other day to discover that I couldn’t walk because of an extra-special yummy dose of back pain.
While waiting to be seen in the ER, and then waiting at the pharmacy, I had two very nice conversations with other veterans.
I doubt that most people would consider that a justification for spending tax money, but I think a lot of us would miss it if the hospitals went away.
Sadly, Trump has demonstrated his naïveté in trusting Obama’s staff. I trust he’ll get this mess sorted out sooner than later as it becomes more and more obvious Obama people are crooks and thieves.
I think Ollie north could clean up the vs swamp pretty Damn quickly.
What’s not clear from the story:
— Was the wife an employee of the VA?
— If not, all the lowlies get is a phone call home every day.
— Does it not require Congressional approval for executive branch employees to receive gifts from foreign governments?
— Was such permission granted?
