Chinese spies are spreading throughout the United States as part of “a whole-of-society threat,” FBI Director Christopher Wray told lawmakers Tuesday.
The problem is exacerbated by the “naivete” of U.S. academics who don’t recognize the intelligence collectors among them.
“They’re exploiting the very open research-and-development environment that we have, which we all revere, but they’re taking advantage of it,” he said. “So, one of the things we’re trying to do is view the China threat as not just a whole-of-government threat but a whole-of-society threat on their end and I think it’s going to take a whole of-society response by us.”
The use of academic spies and education programs that U.S. officials regard as part of a plan to influence American public opinion are outgrowths of a long-term plan to facilitate Chinese power, they agreed. A major CIA research project, published for public consumption in 2015, concluded that Chinese foreign policy is a running a “hundred-year marathon” to displace the United States as a superpower by mid-century.

He was old when I heard him speak at least 4 to 6 yrs ago, he was a Tea Partier here in MI A retired College Prof from a College of note in MI, no, not the one who's colors are Green and White. He was on a bit of a screed about the Chinese Students at the unnamed University and he noted 80% of the Naval Architecture Dept was Chinese immigrants and their were concerns they were vacuuming up any technical papers etc they could get their hands on in said school...

I’m Chinese immigrating to America in 1990 and became citizen in 2005. I do not remember once I ever talked to Chinese government. Home visited a couple of times. The rest of time, Just work and raise family like everyone else. I kind of understand where Wrays came from. Yes indeed Chinese government has sent lately some people to spy on Americans. No questions about it. But overtake America? I doubt it. Politically his comments could easily get backfired. Im not worried nor should Americans. After all Chinese are not Japanese or Russians who always covet other people territory. It’s in their genes. But if McCarthy 2.0 came I deal with it

I've been ‘worried’ for some time....I can't watch a Netflex movie without seeing Chinese people and movies splashed across it....same for commercials. It's not just the face of our nation that's changing ‘enormously’ it's the culture demands now being made to force us to adapt to other cultures along side ours rather than retaining ours.....

Stealth China is a really bad actor....Mass producing fentenyl, lead paint, flammable children’s clothes, intellectual property theft, unfair trade, buying up America and farm land in other countries as well to meet rapidly rising demand.
Further Coats said that China cyber operations against private sector are focused on “defense contractors or IT And communications firms.”..and we know China uses cyber-attacks to bolster it’s nation’s national security posture.
The modern Chinese state is a colonial one that has annexed Tibet, East Turkestan, and Inner Mongolia...Not to forget Manchuria, Hong Kong & Taiwan......though Japan and Taiwan do not fully accept Beijing’s dictatorship as of yet.

Absolutely! Americans can’t buy land in Mexico. Or lots of other countries. But we encourage foreigners—with or without money—to buy up our land, businesses, and corporations.
And we give away our intellectual property via academia very cheaply.

All S.E. Asian Nations have large Ethic Chinese populations who dominate business and politics. Indonesia had a problem with that in the 1960s when rivers run red with Chinese blood. That was then, China was dead. As the Dragon awakens, so do the Chinese tongs world-wide
