Teachers/professors don’t have to be drill instructors and their classroom doesn’t have to be boot camp but making kids work, giving kids difficult work is better for their development. They’re not doing the kids any favors by trying to be liked.
Too many people are too concerned about what other people think of them. This goes for many, many areas of life. Concerning yourself with what others think is a recipe for an overly stressful life.
“You have no responsibility to live up to what other people think you ought to accomplish. I have no responsibility to be like they expect me to be. Its their mistake, not my failing.
Richard P. Feynman”
I often say “In the entire world, there are about a dozen people whose opinions I pay attention to. My parents, my wife, a few friends, my boss (when it comes to work). That’s about it. After that, I don’t care if someone disapproves of something I say, something do or how I live my life. It’s not their business any more than how they live their life is my business.”
Yep - doesn’t matter if your a drill instructor/NCO/military officer or a business supervisor/manager or a teacher/professor - it’s all about setting the highest standard and holding people accountable to that standard IF you want them to survive and become more capable.
If you allow them to slack then they die/fail and the organization dies/fails. If not in the short term then in the long term.
People are too focused on the short term and not the long game. If they are focused on the long game then it is one of sabotage.
