Urging Americans to stop putting a label on other people because thats when the problems start, boxing legend Evander Holyfield told PJM that Americas two-party political system was set up to divide the country.
Holyfield, who was in town for the National Prayer Breakfast closing dinner, also weighed in on the state of race relations in the nation, saying every life matters when asked about the impact of the Black Lives Matter movement.
When two people can forgive and come together and truly love each other, you know, to love someone, to know that youre a human being, and its not for the color of your skin, its that youre people. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you, Holyfield told PJM after the dinner on Thursday evening, the same day as the National Prayer Breakfast with President Trump.
Somehow I think its [the political system] already set up to divide when you have a Democrat and youve got a Republican. What about just people? If you wasnt a Democrat and I wasnt a Republican, we wouldnt be going against each other. Lets get the best people who can do the work, he added.
Holyfield declined to comment on Trumps job performance, stating that he does not like to judge anyone.
Well, I try not to get into judging. I think when you judge, somebody is going to be happy and somebody is going to be sad, so I keep my comments to myself and just do what I know Im supposed to, he said.
The five-time heavyweight champion was asked if he thinks the country is more divided now than it was under previous presidents.
I think theres just more trouble, thinking about it, more so than putting the work in you have to do the work, you just cant talk about it, you know what am saying, because you are always going to have somebody feel this way and feel that way. The most important thing is love itself, he replied.
He said judging people by their political party affiliation is just like when you get into skin color.
You give a person a choice, you say, they think that way because they are light. They think this because they are dark, because theyre tall, theyre short, you know, when it comes to any given time when you label something then thats when the problems start, he said.
Holyfield said its hard for him to assess the state of race relations in the U.S. at this point in his life.
It all depends on where youre at. Ive moved to a whole other level. Of course, I think its better Im talking about for me, because I know when you judge life youre talking about whats happened to you in your community, he said. So, Ive moved up, so its hard for me to speak for everybody. I can speak for where I came from and what Ive done and all that, but if a person has not yet done that then, of course, they see it a little different.
When asked if groups like Black Lives Matter have helped improve race relations in the country, Holyfield said he thinks all lives matter.
I think every life matters so if all lives matter, so if this country was founded on people who came here to get an opportunity, you cant forget that. If you came over here, somebody had to help you, he said. Theres always somebody you just cant forget that you didnt make it by yourself. I think a lot of people think weve always been on top. Nobodys ever been on top. Theres always change.
Holyfield was asked if he thinks lawmakers on Capitol Hill are going to be able to move past their party labels and solve divisive issues such as immigration policy.
We are people. If you believe do unto others as you want them to do to you think about it. If you were struggling and you were trying to get in, you hope somebody helps you in, but wont nobody help you in. But I do believe that youve got to take care of home first. Youve got to sweep your porch before you sweep somebody elses porch. Youve got to know, is this going to mess you up or not? Holyfield replied.
So youve got to start with yourself. What are you doing? The more mistakes you make, somebody is going to have to help you. Now you cant help nobody because you are making too many mistakes to help anybody, so the fact of the matter is youve got to start at home first, so youve got to get yourself right to where you can help somebody, he added.
Holyfield did not address the National Prayer Dinner, but he explained the role that religion has played in his life during the interview with PJM.
I wouldnt be who I am if it wasnt about faith and about Jesus. Everything that ever amounted to anything is my life was by Jesus, said the boxer, who would often enter the ring to gospel music.
Our country was built on [faith]. How can a country at the bottom come to the top? The only way you can come to the top is youve got to have Jesus but when you pull away from it, you start going down too, he added.
He told PJM he did not plan at all to advocate for any specific causes during his visit to D.C. for the National Prayer Dinner.
The thing is Im concerned about the country, Holyfield said. And when you get an opportunity to come see how people are trying to come together, pretty much I think now that people know it doesnt work for anybody when its not balanced.
So how long until the left “asks” him to recant?
It’s almost shocking to hear a well known public figure speaking with both logic and compassion. Thank you, Mr. Holyfield. Maybe there’s room on the Trump Train for someone like him. He would have to be ready for all the angry liberals though, furious that he has walked off the plantation. Not everyone wants to deal with that level of negativity.
He will not!
Before the internet came along, and before magazines like National Geographic and Ladies Home Journal got all politicized....we didn’t get hyped up on political agendas except every four years. Most people couldn’t name but maybe one senator from their state, and the governor. If you asked people who the vice-president was....it was a 50-50 chance they’d get it right.
Holyfield is correct.
Evander has always been a good man. Despite the reporter trying several different ways to get him to criticize President Trump, he wouldn’t take the bait. Reading between the lines, it’s fairly clear Evander is a conservative Republican.
How long before some white ***ty SJW calls him a “coon” on Twitter and it will be considered perfectly fine because George committed wrong think.
I watched this tonight and was alive as it went down(pun intended)!
That is when the world first heard B.L.M. in politics. Then it was for Bill’s Lies Mattered or Bill loves Monica.
Perhaps not surprising, since "Evander" in Greek means "good man." (It's also my middle name, and my father and grandfather's given name.)
Commonsense in a celebrity is so refreshing.
So it was never about race.. it was, has and always will be about Jesus Christ. The worlds most feared enemy... a powerful follower of Christ. Who is it? Anyone serves their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
God bless you, Champ!
What ever happened to his ears? ( Remember the Mike Tyson biting episode ? )
Now people are in a hyper politicized state, and they still can't tell you who their senatecritters are.
Oh I would disagree...you can have some folks who will rattle off their two senators, and then fifteen additional Senators, along with a dozen Congressmen, and the whole Supreme Court.
In that 1968, no one could remember that many names, but they could remember the starting line-up of the St Louis Cardinals or the Detroit Tigers.
A relative few may know the names, but couldn't really tell you much about them other than "R Good, D Bad" or vice versa depending upon their party.
From my perspective, things are looking up mainly for one reason. I'm getting old enough that I no longer am sure that it will all come crashing down around my ears before I pass on.
