The California Department of Transportation, in cooperation with a joint powers authority, will in June begin buying land to build a 63-mile high desert freeway connecting the Los Angeles County communities of Palmdale and Lancaster with the San Bernardino County communities of Victorville, Apple Valley and Adelanto.

The countys first new freeway in a quarter-century is something of a throwback, as regional planners have shifted their focus in recent years toward mass transit and infill development to combat snarled traffic and housing shortages. Yet it serves as a reminder that even as Los Angeles moves to encourage more density in its urban neighborhoods, development continues to push into the scrublands on the countys fringes.
...Palmdale and Lancaster have seen their populations surge even landing among the nations 10 fastest-growing cities in 2007, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. T

The environmental impact report has already been approved, paving the way for right of way agents to begin acquiring land this spring with $274 million generated by Measure M, a sales tax increase approved by Los Angeles County voters in 2016 to build transportation projects over the next 40 years.
...
State and county officials say they may decide to build in phases as funding becomes available. Proposals to make certain stretches of the freeway, or its entire length, a toll road are also under discussion, officials say.

The route would run roughly parallel to State Route 18 and State Highway 138, also known as Pearblossom Highway. Congestion is a problem on Highway 138 thanks to big rigs, commuters and travelers to Las Vegas.

needed! How did they get Jerry brown’s DOT to cooperate
Let’s double deck I-5 through LA county or go underground with a tunnel.
Of course we could use a high speed train. Ontario and Burbank to barstow then 1 line to Vegas. Gambling on the train to help pay for it.
I-15 a traffic jam. Or let the vegas hotels pay with an occupancy tax. That’s where everyone going.
If cal would spend the gas tax on Hwys as the laws require we wouldn’t need toll roads.
Pomona took a lot of blacks after the watts riot. Changed the nature of the city. The surrounding cities wouldn’t see to blacks. HUD or whatever it was at the time moved a lot of ,welfare and parolees to pomona.
I own a 10 acre lot near Sheeps Creek Road which will probably have an on ramp. Anyone want desert living? Horses? lots in a my area zoned 10 acres.

Yes, but then they could not extort/blackmail us with potholes to justify tax increases.
My town wanted a local tax, for road repair, you know.
They posted a sign, Vote for Measure X, right next to the biggest pothole farm on the main road.
That just reinforced my opposition, and illustrates their insincere scheme.
It did pass, after a couple of tries, and they did fix that particular problem area.
But they have left another pothole collection, which is eroding quickly, and are diverting road repair money to Quality of Life efforts.
Hmmmm. Fixing potholes would enhance Quality of Life (if they were honest).
state law requires they spend the gas tax on roads and they don’t No one in power ever goes to jail.
On the way to Reno, the my least favorite stretch of Rte. 395 is through the Adelanto area.

Lots of folks have died on 395. Impatient. Drunk. Tired. Got to get home from Mammoth.
I drive it in high alert mode. Been forced to hit the ditch to allow cars to pass, two-wide in one lane.
The highway will encourage, boost, the already active residential building boom out there, and the water for all the additional people there is coming from where?
That is so sad to hear what your parents went through.
Good question.
Barstow.
