Supersonic Round Features 100-Mile Range

The Department of Defense recently announced plans to test-fire a hypervelocity projectile or HVP that will reach speeds of Mach 6 (4,600 mph) with the ability to hit targets up to 100 miles away. In development for more than a decade, it was initially developed for use with the infamous railgun. However, with that weapon system facing cost and application issues, the new HVP could be fired from 155 mm howitzers or the deck guns found on Navy destroyers and cruisers.

Described as a defensive weapon, some analysts think it could be a low-cost alternative to the Patriot Advanced Capability-3 interceptors that run about $3 million per round. The new HVPs cost closer to $85,000 each.

So, if the tests go well, these cost savings would allow the U.S. to support more defensive positions around the globe.

In addition to the cost savings, these rounds could also offer a tactical advantage. While the Patriots work well against ballistic missiles, the HVP seems to track cruise missiles and hypersonic weapons more effectively - both of which have seen increased use by China and Russia. Also worth noting is that this decision seems to pit two large U.S. aerospace manufacturers in an interesting, yet competitive situation. BAE Systems supplies these HVPs, and Lockheed Martin makes the Patriot interceptors.

Did the Navy not install these on the new Zumwalt class destroyers?

Cool stuff that goes boom. The shockwave alone from a 2,000 pound round fired from one of those guns destroys everything it gets near.

The math on the energy delivered (kinetic operation) = 48,560,000,000 pounds of force.

That is a BFD.

Would the guns currently on ships stand up to that kind of force?

I believe the mag rail gun uses continuous acceleration until the point it leaves the barrel, thus reducing the recoil. Not to say it is not immense, but nowhere near the receiving end of business.

Very good question though. Most likely classified information not yet bandied about by FBI agents wanting to be executive lap dogs.

I have seen videos of a 2000 pound projectile fired 20 miles off of one of those guns. Impressive. I understand though the capacitors that charge the thing are short lived and take quite some time to recover from a firing.

Fast but dumb. The round, not you.
The PATRIOT is a Phased Array Targeting Radar for Inteception On Target missile. it cost more because it will find it’s target.
I’m all for dumb munitions and lots of them, don’t get me wrong.

“I understand though the capacitors that charge the thing are short lived and take quite some time to recover from a firing.”

But I wanted to eat my cake now, and still save it for later.

Everything’s a trade-off, isn’t it?

The Doppler shock wave of such a weapon will destroy anything within 100 yards of it’s path in mid flight. So you only need to get close in flight, then pray for the poor bastards wherever the thing is going to land.

I’ll take a couple. Got a new F150 on order, need to deck it out with a couple antifa guns. :)

Where’s Gerald Bull when ya need him?

Few will get that allusion but that Canuk sure killed a lot of Persians and Arabs.

"Supersonic" title doesn't do this round justice: 4600mph >>> 741mph
