I am a big Trump supporter and have agreed with many of the controversial things that Trump said. In this case this statement was dumb and not helpful. There is no positive spin I can put on it other than it was not a big deal.

First it is obvious that he was joking around with the crowd repeating what someone said. Trump enjoys responding with and playing with the crowd. The context is something that the press with their TDS always misreports. That aspect does not trouble me at all. Nevertheless, the context of how treason was used was poor and minimizes the seriousness of that charge. The problem is that there is a real possibility of treason (or very serious) charges that are currently being investigated. (of which I believe that Trump is fully aware of). With regard to the MSM - just look at what is currently going on with the Nunes memo. At the very worst it should have the press asking questions even if you assume their large bias towards the Dems. If serious charges are brought up against the top Dems there will be much pushback from the MSM. It may be the epicenter of battle against the swamp. (Another reason to thank god that we have Trump at the helm who has an effective bully pulpit). Bottom line - in this environment, being glib with the word treason was an unforced error.

I am a strong believer in let Trump be Trump. I would advise him to be more wary and shrewd when repeating things from the crowd.

Not only was Trump joking, but he was playing off the Dems’ recent trend of recklessly calling things “treasonous,” e.g., questioning global warming, criticizing the FBI, criticizing Mueller, etc. But when the Dems say it, they are serious.
