Former FBI agents say it may take a long time to wash away the stain of political bias accusations lobbed against the bureau, which had long been viewed as the nation’s premier law enforcement agency.
The criticism of the storied bureau has been bipartisan, with Republicans pointing to accusations the agency mishandled the justification for spying on a Trump campaign figure. Before that it was Democrats furious at the FBI’s handling of presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s email failures.
In between were a slew of embarrassing text messages from an agent involved in both the Trump and Clinton investigations, revelations of top officials’ partisan ties, and a wave of demotions and ousters.
“If people start looking at the FBI as a political organization the taint will be incredible,” said James Wedick, a 34-year agency veteran who now works as an investigator.
Credibility allegations have taken a toll on the bureau. The New York Times last week published a piece from Josh Campbell, a former supervisory special agent who said informants may be less willing to come forward in a terrorist investigation, or a jury may not give an agent testifying at trial the same expectation of truth it once would have.
Mr. Campbell wrote the piece to announce he was quitting the FBI in order to take a public role in defending it, blaming President Trump and his allies for unfairly sullying the bureau.
“A small number of my current and retired colleagues have said that we should simply keep our heads down until the storm passes. I say this with the greatest respect: They are wrong,” Mr. Campbell wrote. “If those who know the agency best remain silent, it will be defined by those with partisan agendas.”

The FBI and CIA have immense power (IMHO much of it unnecessary). There will always be a temptation to abuse. From J.Edgar Hoover onwards, the FBI’s history indeed has been one of regular scandal and dangerous political meddling.
It needs more than “housecleaning.”

IMHO, the FIB has been corrupt since Louis Freeh. GWB wasn’t destructive enough to the Left’s power to worry about, so they all took the ‘go along to get along’ route. But Trump is seriously damaging the power the Left has enjoyed for decades (remember Trent Lott sharing power when the Senate was evenly split in 2000? Does anyone think the Dems would have done the same thing???)
Agreed...The FBI is in the executive branch and POTUS is their ultimate boss.
Their reputation is already tarnished, clean it up.

They did it to themselves- They should be disbanded and their function absorbed into the US Marshals.
Bunch of dirty cops in DOJ and FBI,and black dems who are always railing against law enforcement destroying civil rights ,are okay with THESE dirty cops destroying civil rights of people they don’t like....
I’m not for giving the rank and file a pass...YOUR LEADERS are dirty cops..Yet,no whistleblowers to bring them down...No one wants to go after them...Remember that when you ask civilians to be heroes and help you go against bad guys.
The FBI has been a corrupt organization for a while. More people are just noticing now.
Comey should be prosecuted for obstructing justice on the Hillary email matter and for CONSPIRACY IN A COUP TO OVERTHROW A DULY-ELECTED PRESIDENT otherwise known as TREASON. He also DEFRAUDED a FISA court with a FAKE Dossier funded by Hillary Clinton.
Comey committed enough crimes to spend THE REST OF HIS LIFE IN A FEDERAL PRISON!

The fact that so few FBI rank-and-file have been willing to come forward as whistleblowers or publicly criticize their bosses is deeply, deeply disturbing IMO.
I think public confidence in the FBI has cratered and cannot be rebuilt. They are going to have a hard time getting people to talk to them going forward.
I agree. I think the military could handle most of what the CIA does also.
