China is reportedly moving missile defense batteries and troops closer to its border with North Korea, a potential sign that Beijing anticipates either a large refugee wave north or a military disturbance triggered by the belligerence of communist dictator Kim Jong-un. The South Korean newspaper Chosun Ilbo cited Radio Free Asia (RFA) in a report Monday, stating that RFA had compiled evidence that China had late last year deployed another missile defense battery at an armored division in Helong, west of Longjing in the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture.
The North Korean source in China speaking to RFA also noted that Pyongyang had observed the movement of 300,000 troops closer to the North Korean border and missile defense batteries near North Korean reservoirs by the Apnok and Duman rivers. The batteries would prevent the violent outpouring of those reservoirs into China in the event of an airstrike.
On Friday, Chinas state-run Peoples Daily newspaper reported that Beijing was also investing in establishing nuclear monitoring stations throughout the world, but especially near North Korea, to more rapidly gather information about a potential airstrike. While carefully noting that detection is not targeted at any particular country, the newspaper noted that the planned 11 nuclear monitoring stations are responsible for detecting nuclear activities in neighboring countries, including North Korea.
The Peoples Daily claims the monitor plan shows Chinas commitment to global nonproliferation. Taken in tandem with reports of military movements near North Korea, however, this development indicates concern that a major military or political event in North Korea will impact China significantly.
Another state newspaper, the Global Times, remarked on U.S. President Donald Trumps State of the Union address last week that risks of US military action are growing.

Is it more likely that they are going to sweep in to stabilize the country after the Rocket Man gets deep sixed by them or us?
I agree.
It was one thing when the Norks were a thorn in our side. Now they are a thorn in China’s side.
The only winner here is Russia.
It is insane to predict what a lunatic will do. You must prepare for the most likely possibilities. In a sane world, Un would be in a loonie bin (or dangling from the end of a noose) and not running a pi$$ant country with nukes.
Wonder if this is in addition to the reported 150,000 moved to the border regions? And then there are the refuge camps near the border reported to be under construction by the Chinese.
Next question: will these troops be like the 27 Army that brutally killed thousands in Tienanmen Square - forbidden to read any news source, told only what the cadre want them to know?
Why do they need missile batteries? Are they anti-air or surface to surface?
The CCP are typical bureaucratic Marxists. Decisions are collective and they are analyzed from every angle and for the message it sends.
Kim is a threat to their own stability. They want a buffer state between them and Japan/USA, and under no circumstances want a united Korea aligned with the USA. but Kim has become a real liability, and simply his nukes, on China’s borders, are a threat.
Expect Kim to eventually be killed in a coup. China will be there to help his successors
That thought has crossed my mind.
If Kim is assassinated then democrats will be saddened
North Korea is just a province of China. China calls the shots. If it didn’t, the Kims would have been out of there a long, long time ago.
Then maybe they are there to tell us, “The only way you get this done is with troops on the ground. Here are 300,000 reasons why you shouldn’t do that.”
I agree with your analysis.
Well, how long will that numerically inferior People’s Liberation Army detachment hold back against the invasion of China be the North Korean army?
Kim Jong Un is a pretty ambitious lad, and the way to the United States with a land army with limited trans-oceanic transport capability, is to march up through China and the eastern part of the Russian Federation, to cross at the Bering Strait and invade Alaska.
Attacking the continental US through Alaska worked so well for the Japanese. They did not even take Hawaii and hold it.
Grabbed the heck out of the Philippines for a while, though.
300,000? Well I’ve done the math. It would take 6700 Patricia’s to wipe the floor with them.
Sadly 294 Patricia’s wouldn’t make it, but the other side would have 60,000 casualties. Good odds.
Battle of kapyong 1951, is it time for a redo?
Let them take Alaska! That would be a cruel trick. Bring Alaskans back to Yukon etc, let them build up in Alaska in very large numbers, then just take em all out in one fell swoop. Just tell folks it’s open season and let nature run its course. Chinese problem forever solved, or maybe at least a few hundred years.
How will missile batteries prevent flooding?
Maybe they plan to take out any suspected NORK nuke launch in the boost phase, knowing that if there is nuclear retaliation by the U.S. they will inevitably get fallout.
The Philippines are pretty much in the Japs' back yard, though.
