Some Philadelphia Eagles players skipping White House visit over Trump

The Philadelphia Eagles won the Super Bowl for the first time in the franchise's history on Sunday, but several players have already indicated that they will not participate in the traditional White House visit, citing their opposition to President Donald Trump. Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins, who also raised his fist during the National Anthem this past season, told CNN on Monday that he intends to skip the White House visit. "Nah, I personally do not anticipate attending," Jenkins told CNN's "New Day." Wide receiver Torrey Smith, who also raised his fist on the field to express solidarity with the "Black Lives Matter" movement, expressed his disapproval of Trump's war against players who take a knee during the national anthem to protest racism.

Trump, who released a statement on Super Bowl Sunday urging players to "proudly stand for the anthem," congratulated the Eagles for their historic win.

Smith and some of his teammates were some of Trump's most outspoken critics.

Eagles defensive end Chris Long, who skipped the White House visit last year when he played for last year's champs, the New England Patriots, also won't attend.

"No, I'm not going to the White House. Are you kidding me?" he said during an interview on Pardon My Take Podcast last Sunday.

One reason why I didn’t watch. Even though they didn’t kneel, they wanted to. So I perceived this and didn’t watch.

You're right. As if to say: "I want to kneel to disrespect the flag but that's getting old so instead I'm holding my clenched fist high."

These men are tremendous football players, and no one can take that from them. Having said that, why do they think anyone really cares about their political views. Like their counterparts in Hollywood, they have an inflated opinion of themselves and their importance. Easy to do when you are paid millions to play a game. I wonder how eagerly their opinions would be sought out if they no longer could tackle or intercept a football? My guess is not at all.

Not saying you’re wrong, but I noticed a number of shots where you couldn’t see the players below the chest, but you could notice their heads were at or below the shoulders of the person next to them.

I just think they kept it out of sight.

Perhaps you’ve seen reliable reports that nobody knelt, and it may be true. I sure had suspicions of it.

They are of no value to me as a part of relaxation and enjoyment if they screw with my nation and make me angry.

I could care less about their talent. I just won’t watch.

Your comment about anyone caring about their opinions is true. Nobody would care if they were off the team. (didn’t have the talent to remain on it)

Their absence won’t materially affect the course of history. In fact, who were they again?
