Not an inane argument. The district - which I live in - has no trouble with someone voting conservative. The Democrats who have won in the district did so after bitter GOP primaries that saw the GOPE attacking the conservative Republican. When the GOP withholds funding from conservative candidates in the district, after spending money to get liberal ones thru the primary, THEN the democrat wins.

Giffords' old AZ 8th was reconfigured (gerrymandered) for the 2012 election and is more conservative now (Trent Franks scandal notwithstanding). Basically Frank's (R) and Barber (D, successor to Giffords) swapped districts (2nd and 8th).
The PVI on AZ 2nd, McSally's district, is R+1 and went for Hillary Clinton 50-45. McSally was probably the only Republican who could have won it.
