Aina Gamzatova, a 46-year-old woman from Dagestan, has made it official. She wants to run against Russian President Vladimir Putin in the March 2018 election.
Some see her campaign - irrespective of its results - as a way to boost the image of Muslim women in Russia and to attract attention to the needs of impoverished, overpopulated and multi-ethnic Dagestan.
Her husband, Akhmad Abdulaev, is the Mufti of Dagestan, Russia's troubled province where a confrontation between fighters, clans and federal forces has killed thousands.
She belongs to a Sufi order that has tens of thousands of followers and whose leader, Said-Afandi Chirkavi, was killed by a female suicide bomber in the Caucasus in 2012.
Aisha Anastasiya Korchagina, an ethnic Russian convert to Islam who works as a psychologist in Moscow, said: "She was brave enough to use her legal right, that is granted to every Russian national, to run for president, she is brave enough to run a decent election campaign."
"Even if she loses, people will know that a girl in a hijab is not just a mother or a woman, but is also an educated, wise and respected woman," former Olympic champion in boxing and Dagestan's deputy sports minister Gaidarbek Gaidarbekov wrote on Instagram.

Her loss will be more than just an election ...
Maybe I’m just warped but when I hear or read the title “Mufti” I get the image of a grizzled old man with a full beard that resembles a fat woman’s untrimmed pubic array.
People don’t understand that Russia has the largest Muslim population of anywhere in Europe. And growing.
Even the Russian army is largely made up of Muslims “gastarbeiters” (guest workers) from Central Asia and other former Soviet states.
Ah, Vanessa Angel.
“Are Russia’s 20 million Muslims seething about Putin bombing Syria?”
Pinging from the prior Syria/Iran threads. Everyone’s so enthused about supporting the Russian military these days. But remember: a big chunk of the military is made up of Russian Muslims.
And on the flip side, the biggest contingent of foreign recruits for ISIS come also, from Russia.
“Many observers have warned that Putins military campaign in Syria may backfire at home. Russias 144 million people include about 20 million Muslims; the overwhelming majority are Sunnis. Some analysts believe that these Russian Sunnis will recoil from Russias support for Assads Alawite-dominated regime and its attacks on Sunni rebels, and from Russias effort to lead a coalition of Shiite powers, Iran, Iraq and Syria.”
But the picture is more complex:
Sufis are once again being targeted in Iran, as are dervish.
Sufis are not Jihadists.
Well good, I would hope not. For Russia’s sake.
sounds like McCrazy and Pelosi now want to spend a few zillion funding Muslim wackos inside Russia.
thats even dumber than those dummies funding jihadists in Syria & Iraq
Good luck with all that.
Those “ sunni rebels” are aka al Qaeda
Not exactly fighting Alawites - fighting against any secular regime
Shame on us for assisting them
Wonder how far someone like her would get in our political process.

Uh we already proved that.
We ‘allowed’ such clowns as Sharpton, J Jackson, WJClinton, Hillary Clinton, algore, Jf’nKerry and countless others with a British citizen eventually winning. Even Winston Churchill knew better than to run.
Would imagine in most any other country in the world the challengers such as the aforementioned would NEVER be heard again after the election.
Mufti, as I (and probably you) knew it was civvies or clothing worn by those who normally wore a uniform...
‘Mufti of Dagestan’ Sounds like a ‘Mouse That Roared’ plot.

Sufis are not immune to Islamism. The founder of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood, Hassan al-Banna, and his people, were Sufis-other Islamists called them “dervishes”.
