Are we missing the real opioid drug crisis?

---SNIP--- while the US tries to deal with its over-use of these powerful medicines, millions of people in other parts of the world are dying in agony because they can't get hold of them.

"I remember waking up from my mastectomy in Mexico City. The pain was so severe that I couldn't breathe," says Felicia Knaul, who had her left breast removed several years ago.

"It took about 10 minutes before the physicians could come and adjust my pain medication. [It was] not only the agony, but the fear of not wanting to breathe because of the pain."

Spurred on by her experience - and the knowledge that millions of people never see their physician arrive with pain relief - Felicia Knaul decided to focus her work on pain relief, and is now a professor and international health economist in the US.

the problem is not that people get painkillers after surgery.

The problem is that if you stub your toe, the doctor writes you a scrip for 30 Oxycodones because “they’re not addictive if they are prescribed,” according to the drug company’s literature.

Some people by the end of that month are already addicted.

Makes sense if you have your tooth pulled to get one or two. You don’t need 30.

Make a simple line graph showing the number of Opiate Prescriptions over the past 100 years. The line will be flat until right about time the American government gained control over the worlds poppy supply. Then the line spikes to the sky!

Where does this happen? I’ve had dentists deny me a painkiller when I had an exposed nerve.

This article is utter hooey, for the reason that *synthetic* opioids, far stronger than pure morphine, are as cheap as dirt and very easy to synthesize.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equianalgesic

Fentanyl 50-100 times stronger than pure morphine.

Carfentanil 10,000-100,000 times stronger than pure morphine.

A kilogram of Carfentanil runs for about $5,000 and can produce at least a million doses. The hardest part is diluting it so that it doesn’t kill you. 50 micrograms will overdose an adult.

So bottom line, a country with a large population can get all the synthetic pain reliever it needs for years for just a small amount of money.

So dentists are handing out tons of dope in TN? Or are they buying it on the street?

it's completely grotesque, but how synthetic opioid DEMAND based on legal prescriptions would be driven by an increase in supply that occurred a decade after the demands started rising, is something you have to explain, not me.

There’s nothing irrational about not wanting to take a highly addictive medicine to mask the pain a problem is causing rather than fix the problem. That’s the real source of the opioid crisis, doctors who hear the problem, can’t immediately guess as to what’s causing it and how to fix it, and then hand you a scrip for vicodin.

Oxycodone is a semisynthetic opioid synthesized from thebaine, an opioid alkaloid found in the Persian poppy.

I hate all options. Bad stuff, but sometimes you got to have them.

Do everything in your power not to need them.

Opiods have many ways to kill you.
