American religious groups vary widely in their views of abortion

More than four decades after Roe v. Wade legalized abortion nationwide, most Americans (57%) are supportive of legal abortion, according to a 2017 Pew Research Center survey. But a substantial minority (40%) says abortion should be illegal in all or most cases, and within some U.S. denominations and religious groups, this figure is much higher.

But we don’t vary widely about dismembering pain-capable babies and Americans overall would ban after 20 weeks. Not the Senate, today.

I find these polls very misleading.

What, exactly, do they mean by “supporting abortion”? I think that the more specific these questions become, the less support there is for abortion. While most people agree that there should be exceptions in the case of a grave threat to the mother’s life, few agree that the use of abortion as a primary form of birth control is acceptable.

I wonder what the percentages would be if the question were framed, “Over 90% of abortions are performed as a primary form of birth control—that is, that the girls and women having the abortions do not use any other form of birth control. Do you think that the use of abortion as a primary form of birth control should be legal?”

I guess Unitarian, Jewish, Episcopal, and “United Church of Christ” babies don’t feel any pain when they’re carved up into pieces

(the socalled “reform” or leftwing, secular type “Jews” may indeed have such a split as in the chart,..... but almost all of the more regular or traditional or ‘orthodox’ Jews are quite strongly pro-life (the teachings are complex but “choose Life” .... Deuteronomy 30:19...is a key ... so that, for example, most “real” Jews would allow abortion if necessary to save the mother’s life....but would do few additional abortions...... this is, not incidentally, what the Roman Catholic Bishop’s assistant for matters of ethics and life....told us is the Church’s teaching, too... several years ago, admittedly....the even Catholic split in the poll is therefore, very distressing... I guess maybe half of Catholics aren’t very.....well, Catholic these days...which is consistent with a lot of the problems going on in the Church, alas!).

Indeed, several of the figures in the chart are quite concerning. It appears we’ve been moved a lot more towards an outright pagan culture?

I believe a church pretty well outs itself when it refuses to address abortion for what it is.

They should at least have a denominational position that supports life.

You can demand each parishioner adopt that policy, but I think there’s an argument to be made that people need to come to terms with that between them and God. I’m not intimating by that there is a way to do so that leaves an opening for abortion. I can’t believe God wants the unborn slaughtered en mass. I don’t believe he wants to see minority children killed off either.

We need to confront this issue, and very stridently move toward zero tolerance as a nation.

Did you even look at the graphic in the first post? That'll give you just how misleading this question was. Even if they did pick n choose who they asked, this is still pretty sad. The question isn't ambiguous AT ALL.

% of US Adults in each religious group who say that IN ALL OR MOST CASES, ABORTION SHOULD BE LEGAL/ILLEGAL.
