Intel told Chinese firms about chip flaw before US gov: report

Intel Corporation initially warned a handful of customers, including several Chinese technology firms, about security flaws within its processor chips, while at the same time not telling the U.S. government, The Wall Street Journal reported Sunday.

Security experts told the newspaper that the decision could have allowed Chinese tech companies to flag the vulnerabilities to Beijing, giving the Chinese government opportunity to exploit them.

Jake Williams, head of the security company Rendition Infosec and former National Security Agency (NSA) employee, told the Journal that it is a “near certainty” the Chinese government knew about the flaws from the Intel correspondence with Chinese tech companies, as Beijing keeps tabs on such communications.

Thanks Intel. I guess this is the equivalent to kneeling for tech companies. Not only did they make the crappy chip but they told the commies about it first so they could exploit it - very nice.

H1-Bs have no loyalty to the United States, and expecting them to act as if they do is foolish.

Odd that this doesn’t seem to have impacted Intel’s stock pricing yet today.

When a network gets hacked, and data is exposed, its NOT Fed.gov that takes the publicity hit, or suffers the financial loss of clean-up. It is the the seller of the product, or the network provider.

Computer makers around the world use Intel’s products, and Intel has liability to them them. OF COURSE Intel is going to tell them first, as they should.

The spying abilities of Fed.gov are not their first concern, nor should they be.

You ALWAYS contact your customers first!
They need to upgrade the BIOS to fix the problem and they need the notice to plan for it in assembly and testing.

No its not.
All of Intel’s manufacturing and design is done in the USA.
They have a packaging and testing facility in Taiwan and additional design centers in India and Israel.

Intel has fabs in Oregon, Arizona, New Mexico, Israel and Ireland.
The biggest in the world is in Arizona

Intel has NO design, fabs or manufacturing in China.
They DO have customers who design computers for Lenovo and other companies in the USA and world wide.

Intel chips and hardware are specifically designed from the ground up to accommodate the USG’s spying ambitions.

If they didn’t tell the USG first, it means the USG already knew - because it was responsible for creating the security hole in the first place.

I respectfully suggest you have no idea what you are talking about.
I worked for Intel for 25 years, 20 of it in microprocessors design.
The very first integrated encryption design was suggested by Intel in 1998 but was rejected by the NSA for being too secure.

NSA pushed for AES 256 which can be broken with enough computer power.

People who I can actually verify worked for Intel design teams say otherwise.

So... maybe your info is out of date, or maybe you were never in the loop.

Um... I just read this again.

This confirms what I said, so I don’t see why there is an objection. Even 30 years ago as you admit the NSA was in the design process undermining effective security. Do you think they... stopped?
