British Tourists flock to Jamaica, where they tend to stay in fenced in tourist hotels that are off limits to most locals. Now they being told to stay in their rooms.
The reason: sky-high murder rates and a recent spate of killings.
From mirror.co.uk:
British holidaymakers in Jamaica have been told to stay in their resorts by the Foreign Office after a state of emergency was declared following a series of shootings.
Troops have been put on the streets following the killings in Montego Bay, which is popular with tourists.
It follows a series of shootings including a driveby shooting which killed one person, and the shooting of another four times on a roundabout near to the main airport Sansgster international on Tuesday.
The country's Prime Minister issued a State of Emergency and put security services and troops on the street to tackle the gunmen after a record 335 murders last year in the area.
He has now ordered a massive house-to-house search in the St. John's area for the gunmen and tourists are being tole to stay in their hotel rooms.
The 2017 murder rate for Jamaica was 42.6 per 100,000 population, one of the highest in the world. It is not as high as Baltimore, Maryland, where the rate reached 55.8 in 2017. Many attribute the Baltimore murder rate to a lack of police presence. Police drastically reduced their activities after several officers were charged in the 2015 death of Freddie Gray. The officers were eventually found not guilty of all charges.
In the article in the Mirror, this excuse is given:

Cipes, Tel Aviv and most parts of Jerusalem are probably safer than most large US cities!

Don’t go there. No tourist $$$$$, and things will change. ( I would guess)

I visited Montego Bay back in the 80s. Although it might have been careless, I rode the local buses and walked the streets. The poverty was overwhelming. Kids up to 7 or 8 years old ran around naked because their parents couldn’t afford to clothe them. Food prices seemed high to me; can’t imagine what they were like for the locals.
All this on an island that should be paradise on earth with the beautiful beaches and the fertile land. I suppose it only shows what corrupt politicians can do.

Montego Bay immediate area is not as much of a really popular resort area like Negril and Ocho Rios which have nicer beaches and more resorts.
And of course, NO ONE goes to the capital, Kingston.

Jamaica is a total “Shithole”.
I was there with the coast guard and we didnt land at the international airport or stay in resort hotels.
If you are not in one of those places its a total Shithole and risking your life if you stray.

The 2017 murder rate for Jamaica was 42.6 per 100,000 population, one of the highest in the world. But how is this possible. Don't they have very strict gun control laws there? We've been repeatedly told that gun control saves lives. This report must be a mistake.

I've been to Jamaica a few times during the mid 1980’s and I remember a military presence back then too. They had the military conducting the searches at the airport. I never liked Montego Bay. That's the airport most people fly into. We traveled a few hours on a bus to get to our destination in Negril. It was much cleaner and quieter out in the country.

Why would anyone go there on vacation? You could stay inside right where you’re at & do just as much. What is this place....the Baltimore of the Atlantic?

I used to know St James and St Ann’s and Hanover as well as I know my home back in the 80s
It’s hard to believe that Mo Bay has disintegrated to like the ill parts of Kingston town
Murders were rare outside of Kingston and Spanish Town and May Pen back then
I rarely felt unsafe unlike Colombia and Nicaragua and El Salvador and Haiti and Rio
Jamaica had defined areas like Wareika hills in East Kingston or Bog Walk in Clarendon which you knew to avoid or drive they quick
But basically western Jamaica was ok except during election JLP versus PNP strife which was urban war basically especially in Kingston and a little in mobay
Bogue Hill above Montego Bay where I often stayed was remote and isolated but safe
Duncan’s Beach another hangout bewteeen Falmouth and Ocho again safe and very remote
I even stayed nights at an old plantation great house in very remote St Ann’s ...Minard...and sittinbybthe campfire at night with the stars and tropical night symphony of crickets and tree frogs and cooled by the 2500-3000 foot altitude ...hard to beat
And nights at my girlfriends in the Blue Mountains up a mile high above Newcastle
I’d think nothing of driving at midnight from Mobay over Mt Diablo to Kingston
I hate what thugg kulture has done

Most Jamaicans dont smoke weed They sell it to the tourists! Any time I've been there, they're everywhere... even on the shuttle bus from the airport to the resorts. Leaving the resort to explore is always an exercise in patience as you're constantly mobbed by kids begging for money and adults trying to sell you Ganja!

Kind of highlights what goes on in Cuba. By all accounts (I only went there once, to a beach party in Gitmo!) it has some of the most beautiful beaches and waters. It could be a major tourist attraction of the Caribbean.
But no. Like Venezuela, ideology is more important than food, clothes, shelter, or personal income.

About 10 years ago my wife was followed into the woman’s bathroom by one of the employees at a high end 5 star resort that I thought would be safe. I grabbed the skinny by his skinny arms and almost threw him off of the side of a cliff....glad I didn’t. Was able to get a free vacation and some other goodies out of the incident but I will never ever set foot in any of these third world countries again. If you want sandy beaches go to Gulf Shores or the Keys.
