After decades helping refugee families become Americans, Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Dubuque announced on Dec. 18 that it was getting out of the business. Its 77-year-old refugee resettlement ministry was being shut down.
(snip)We have received some indication that those agencies that are serving under 100 resettlement clients a year are at risk for being discontinued, of losing their federal contracts, she said on Jan. 9. So some of the agencies that are very small are threatened.
(snip) Sister Markham emphasized that the closing of the refugee programs is not a decision that Catholic Charities is making this is being driven by the decisions being made by the [Trump] administration.
(Snip - More winning !!!)
Just 5,000 refugees were accepted into the United States during the first quarter of fiscal 2018, meaning as few as 20,000 refugees may be allowed into the country this year.
(snip)
Catholic Charities and other agencies involved in refugee services are not just agonizing over the loss of fat federal contracts. In fact, according to Sister Markham, Catholic Charities does not make a cent from its refugee programs.
Like most of Catholic Charities efforts, refugee resettlement is paid for through a combination of public and private resources, abetted by Catholic Charities own fundraising. Federal contracts pay about 70 percent of the costs for refugee resettlement, Sister Markham said, with Catholic Charities itself covering the final 30 percent, in effect, subsidizing U.S. policy on refugee assimilation.
But, facing the loss of all federal support, she does not believe individual Catholic Charities agencies with smaller client bases will be able to assume the entire cost of such programs. They will continue, however, to support refugees any way they can through other Catholic Charities programs like housing, food or other social assistance...

Grandpa, I don't know what Diocese you're in, but our Catholic grade school charges $5680 annual tuition ($568 a month for 10 months). That represents 70% of the actual tuition cost. The other 30% is made up for by fundraisers and contributions from the parish.
“”They are simply conduits to make massive amounts of money by selling legal status & eventual citizenship.””
You are so correct. The leftist mainline churches rely upon the Federal government funding of their ‘refuge’ settlement programs. Without the Fed money these churches would be bankrupt.
What the need to do is make the “charitable” (religious or not!) resettlement offices criminally & civilly liable for the behavior of the people they bring over!
That would really concentrate the minds of these supposed “Do-Gooders”!
Close them. The catholic charities sold their souls for money from the government to “settle” these alien invaders.
Good.
As a Catholic I used to donate to CC’s but now I reserve my contributions to the local Catholic Charities which runs the food shelf and other programs for the poor.
Catholic Charities operates more efficiently when kept close to the donors. It’s not a novel concept. The same as government which is more efficient and accountable when overseeing the local counties, cities, etc.
“Good, the Catholic Church has been assisting in the colonization of our country.”
Well, yeah, since 1492.
Actually it is not. Private charities can provide services by government contract by meeting the same criteria as public agencies. It does not entangle government with establishment of religion violations. If anything religious charities are more likely to be attacked for not sacrificing their beliefs when providing needed services. An example being the demand that religious adoption agencies place babies with single parents or same sex couples.
Funding for the program not overall. Since CC and other private charities providing services are non-profits their tax returns should reflect that status and show they are not getting rich off of such funding.
Legitimate services for legitimate refugees are not in danger. Narrowing the definition of refugee means that more of those who are genuinely in need will be allowed in the U.S. which is how it should be. Most likely Trump has decided to stick with the correct definition under US law.
If I remember rightly they also lost because before it was mandated they had been either providing or referring clients for those services.
“42) The term “refugee” means:
(A) any person who is outside any country of such person’s nationality or, in the case of a person having no nationality, is outside any country in which such person last habitually resided, and who is unable or unwilling to return to, and is unable or unwilling to avail himself or herself of the protection of, that country because of persecution or a well-founded fear of persecution on account of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion, or
(B) in such circumstances as the President after appropriate consultation (as defined in section 207(e) of this Act) may specify, any person who is within the country of such person’s nationality or, in the case of a person having no nationality, within the country in which such person is habitually residing, and who is persecuted or who has a well-founded fear of persecution on account of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion. The term “refugee” does not include any person who ordered, incited, assisted, or otherwise participated in the persecution of any person on account of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion. For purposes of determinations under this Act, a person who has been forced to abort a pregnancy or to undergo involuntary sterilization, or who has been persecuted for failure or refusal to undergo such a procedure or for other resistance to a coercive population control program, shall be deemed to have been persecuted on account of political opinion, and a person who has a well founded fear that he or she will be forced to undergo such a procedure or subject to persecution for such failure, refusal, or resistance shall be deemed to have a well founded fear of persecution on account of political opinion.”
You seem to lack understanding of just to whom “refugee” applies to under U.S. law.
No. My comment stands. The charity” loves illegals in every community.
I don’t disagree with that statement. I am just pointing out this article has to do with refugees. Trump’s administration is doing what should have been done ages ago and making sure applicants truly meet that definition. That will mean fewer refugees. To some this translates to “Trump is heartless.” To me it translates to “They had to show real need.” Right there the list is shortened.
Certainly that should not send a group which is legitimately helping refugees as per their contract with the U.S. government into a panic unless they see their assistance as a form of cash cow to help fund other services. See PP and fungibility for how that works.
Where were the ACLU and DOJ church-and-state-separation zealots when this infiltration was going on under color of religion?
As if we don't know. Sorosobama never met a commie lesbian nun or leftie lutheran loonie they didn't love.
>>Good, the Catholic Church has been assisting in the colonization of our country.<<
Speaking as a Catholic from birth, and having a personal friend who worked many years for Catholic Charities, I can tell you that this is absolutely true. It is a political racket masquerading as a charity.
>>YAY! (I wonder how much Fed money Catholic Charities was getting for their resettlement program)<<
Tens of millions, maybe even hundreds of millions. A money-laundering scam.
>>Catholic Charities is the Orwellian name for a truly evil organization, whose greed-driven treason threatens both Christians and Jews across America. They should lose their exempt status and be defunded to the last penny.<<
AMEN!
