Whos the racist who once said this: All Americans . . . are rightly disturbed by the large numbers of illegal aliens entering our country. The jobs they hold might otherwise be held by citizens or legal immigrants. The public services they use impose burdens on our taxpayers?
Whos the racist who once said this: When I see Mexican flags waving at pro-immigration demonstrations, I sometimes feel a flush of patriotic resentment. When Im forced to use a translator to communicate with the guy fixing my car, I feel a certain frustration?
If you guessed the last two Democratic presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, respectively then youre correct. If you believe their own party would excoriate them for the same words if they uttered them today, then youre also correct. Its time to acknowledge that the Democratic position on immigration has moved rapidly and decisively to the left, so rapidly and decisively that internal progressive debates that were common even a few years ago are settled. Over. To some activists, good-faith dissent from the new position simply isnt possible. Its proof positive that youre racist.
Indeed, this change is so rapid and so dramatic that thoughtful liberals are taking note. Last summer Peter Beinart wrote a long piece in The Atlantic chronicling the transformation. The party platform substantially changed. Politicians like Bernie Sanders were browbeaten into backing an ever-more open-borders position. Beinart talked to Jason Furman, the former chairman of President Obamas Council of Economic advisers. A decade ago or two ago, Furman said, Democrats were divided on immigration. Now everyone agrees and is passionate and thinks very little about any potential downsides.
As Beinart notes, this change hasnt happened because theres now some sort of unshakeable scholarly agreement about immigrations economic or cultural benefits.

Trump has well and truly driven the Democrats nuts.
He drove them nutter.
Which many would not have thought possible.
Thank you for mentioning that this article appeared in National Review. I never click through anything that they have, as long as Billy Kristol, the Hillary loving RINO, still has anything to do with that place. If you’re Never-Trump, I just don’t want to help enrich you! As simple as that!
Its a very good article, worth reading. It explains, at one level, the tendency of groups with a uniform point of view to move to extremism and then a sudden shift in positions. The left is dominant because of the media and the academy, and because they live concentrated in certain areas and talk only to each other.
I think the thing that the author missed, however, is that this unquestioning and harshly enforced uniformity is actually a leftist ideal and comes out of their Communist roots. Party meetings and even meetings of offshoot groups like SDS in the 1960s and 70s always featured crit self-crit, where party members criticized themselves for having deviated in some way from the party line.
Then there is the famous trial in the USSR, where the condemned man at first protested his innocence, and then said, well, if the Party says I did it, then I must have done it, and went off to be executed.

You’re missing out on a great number of thoughtful, conservative and investigative articles, especially from the TRUMP SUPPORTERS who STILL write for the site.
Just because their editorial staff is NeverTrump does not mean that they censor opposing views.
Men like Andrew McCarthy, Victor Davis Hanson and Derroy Murdock are Trump defenders and supporters who NR regularly publishes.
French was a NeverTrumper.
The important question about all of this is whether these urban centers will be able to move enough votes at the voting booth to regain political control over the country.
The long term solution is to take back the media and academia from the extreme leftists.
Both depend heavily on federal subsidy. Cash for academia, licensed oligopolies for the media.
Oxymoron.
Trump has insured that the dems are in a lose-lose situation on immigration as a club - someone needs to tell the concern trolls before they commit suicide.
Don’t be too sure of Hanson and McCarthy. I used to think so, but they may let the Nevers at NR censor them a little.
Yes they can and they will if they get the ignorant general population to knee-jerk approve ballot initiatives deep sixing the electoral college system. This has been the left's goal for a long time. Not an election goes by where the MSM neglects to badmouth the EC to ignorant audiences.
Democrats care about illegals, elites, and criminals.
(this is true - watch for it)
Here’s is Trump’s DACA deal, straight from his email:
Border security: The Department of Homeland Security must have the tools to deter illegal immigration, including physical infrastructure, technology, resources, and personnel.
DACA legalization: The President hopes for legal status to be extended to DACA recipients and other DACA-eligible illegal immigrants, with a 10-12 year path to citizenship based on requirements for work, education, and character.
Protect the nuclear family: Congress should promote nuclear family migration by limiting family sponsorships to spouses and minor children.
Eliminate the lottery and repurpose Visas: The current Visa Lottery system selects individuals at random to come to the United States without consideration of skills, merit, or public safety. Our intake system must better serve the national interest.
I submit that Dems will not take this deal or any other. They will use the Palistinian method of negotiating, nothing will be acceptable but total surrender. Dems want DACA to end so they can cry about the “children”.
For 30 years BOTH parties have been pandering to illegal aliens and NO ONE has been representing the citizens.
That’s why we elected Trump.
The Bush League Republicans had wanted to pawn off another amnesty candidate like they have done in every election since the last amnesty.
They have effectively prevented US from stopping the illegal alien inundation.
They wanted to prevent US from ever electing a President who would enforce the laws and secure the border.
That’s why we elected Trump.
We the people want the laws enforced and the flooding of the country with foreigners stopped. We do not want amnesty for illegal aliens, we want the rule of law restored.
That’s why we elected Trump.
The further you go back in time, immigration become less of a partisan issue.
They don't use the tools they have now in defiance of Trump's goals.
