Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin, D-Ill., a key senator in the talks to find an immigration deal, came out against President Trump's proposal for a grand bargain, in large part because it would curb legal immigration.
"Dreamers should not be held hostage to President Trump's crusade to tear families apart and waste billions of American tax dollars on an ineffective wall," Durbin said in a statement.
Trump's plan would put 1.8 million immigrants who came to the U.S. illegally as children on a decade-long path to citizenship. But that comes at a high price for Democrats, as he also wants $25 billion for a border wall and other security measures.
Trump also wants to end chain migration, the process by which immigrants can get their extended family members to America, and also wants to end the diversity visa lottery.
Durbin said that's all too much to ask.
"The White House claims to be compromising because the President now agrees with the overwhelming majority of Americans that Dreamers should have a pathway to citizenship," he said. "But his plan would put the administration's entire hardline immigration agenda — including massive cuts to legal immigration — on the backs of these young people."
Durbin also seemed to dismiss Trump's plan by saying senators from both parties are still working on their own proposal. Many progressive groups also came out against Trump's plan Thursday night.
However, Republicans have stressed that Congress needs to find a solution that Trump can also support, not just one that can survive a close Senate vote.

Anyway, considering that half of the country had voted by then, he wasn’t doing Trump much of a favor either.

As I pointed out to someone yesterday, Levin may have uttered the words ‘Vote for Trump’, but seconds later he was denigrating Trump mercilessly.
Levin dug himself a hole he can never get out of.

Someone that critiques a President is not denigrating. The man praises him when he has it right and holds his feet to the fire when he thinks he has it wrong. Now if you’re telling me there is nothing to critique I’ll tell you that you may be in the same camp as those who fawned over our last president and thought he split the oceans and walked atop them

The Democrats, in fighting for chain migration and the visa lottery, cannot even pretend to care most about current U.S. citizens and residents.
Consider who they are fighting hardest for: Foreigners with little or zero connection to the USA. Distant foreign relatives and relatives not-yet-born. In the case of the visa lottery, foreigners with zero connection to the country, besides a wish to live here.
Why?
Well the democrats cannot convince white un-hyphenated America to vote for them. So instead they’ll import a new electorate.
It’s already worked like a charm in California, Nevada, Colorado, and Virginia.
Democrats want to change the demographic landscape of the Country for the abject cause of domination.

Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D-N.M.), the chairwoman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, added that the White House proposal is “shameful” and using the DACA program as a “bargaining chip.”
“President Trump is not just trying to shakedown Congressional Democrats; he is trying to shakedown the American people,” she said.
LOL. These Dreamers are about the most self-centered group of people I’ve ever seen. They don’t give two shakes about future legal immigrants or the lottery types.
So Trump just offered up their holy-grail pathway to citizenship, and Durbin put the kiboash on it. Hard to imagine the Dreamers being pissed at anyone but Durbin and the Dems.
