Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin, D-Ill., a key senator in the talks to find an immigration deal, came out against President Trump's proposal for a grand bargain, in large part because it would curb legal immigration.
"Dreamers should not be held hostage to President Trump's crusade to tear families apart and waste billions of American tax dollars on an ineffective wall," Durbin said in a statement.
Trump's plan would put 1.8 million immigrants who came to the U.S. illegally as children on a decade-long path to citizenship. But that comes at a high price for Democrats, as he also wants $25 billion for a border wall and other security measures.
Trump also wants to end chain migration, the process by which immigrants can get their extended family members to America, and also wants to end the diversity visa lottery.
Durbin said that's all too much to ask.
"The White House claims to be compromising because the President now agrees with the overwhelming majority of Americans that Dreamers should have a pathway to citizenship," he said. "But his plan would put the administration's entire hardline immigration agenda including massive cuts to legal immigration on the backs of these young people."
Durbin also seemed to dismiss Trump's plan by saying senators from both parties are still working on their own proposal. Many progressive groups also came out against Trump's plan Thursday night.
However, Republicans have stressed that Congress needs to find a solution that Trump can also support, not just one that can survive a close Senate vote.
So they’ve rejected his proposal. Everyone needs to remember this when the deportations start. They rejected the alternative to deportations
Also, does the number of immigrants have to be negotiated? Isn’t that an administrative decision?
Levin is a NeverTrumper who slams him every chance he gets. He takes credit on every win though.
My favorite is when he claims his show has had influence on POTUS or national events.

Spot on.
Good. Then ship em back to whatever $h!thole they festered out of.
Then declare no filibusters and run your budget including the wall.
A clean DACA bill will never pass the house and have a real tough ride in the Senate. Sorry to disagree.
I tried listening to Levin yesterday but had to turn it off. I don’t know what Levin’s problem is. I will not criticize Trump’s negotiating tactics until a deal is reached that goes against our grain. I don’t like citizenship but if it can put an end to the lottery and chain migration and a beautiful wall, I say we can bite that bullet. We are talking about the offspring of illegals here, not the criminals who came here originally - those people will not get off the hook but given a path, a fine, etc. behind everyone else. I can live with that just like I had to live with Obama pardoning drug lords. A deal here will put an end to people just pouring in here and that is a good thing.
To those here who are unfamiliar even now with the way the President thinks, this response by the Left should make it clear just how far ahead of them he is.
By offering them far more in the way of amnesty numbers he can now claim he went way more than half way in trying to resolve this and point out the Dems rejected the offer. Now, just like Schumer did when he pulled his offer to authorize spending on the wall, Trump can do exactly the same thing and tell Dems his previous offer, all of it, is now off the table because they rejected it.
He doesn’t even have to offer the same thing. The president has won this round as he one the gov shutdown blame game.
Don't discount Operation Indigo Skyfall's ability to deliver such voters. The NWO is counting on it, world-wide! (Cody Snodgres on Youtube will inform you.)
Exactly. Trump gave them just about everything they wanted, and they still said no. Now, it’s on the Dems. I wish the Israelis would do the same thing. Tell the Palis, “We’ll give you your own state, but let one terror attack or rocket land in Israel, then we’re at war and will drive you into the sea!” The Palis won’t be able to control the militants, Israel gets to kill them all and the UN can’t say s**t..
Yep. What Trump is showing HIS BASE is that the most generous plan will be rejected, that the establishment is happy to keep the status quo with no wall and illegals. As he has said many times, they don’t want to deal. They like the status quo, and they have the votes to block anything in the senate.
The only thing they will accept is no wall or token wall and total amnesty for dacas (every illegal under 48 years old)
Even if the filibuster were nuked, establishment republicans would vote down anything more strict than the Grahamnesty bill.
The real question is “what leverage does Trump have elsewhere to hold over their heads?”
NAFTA?
You nailed it Cindy!
Just when I think I can't support this man more, I do.
“Durban isnt going to get a better deal. Both sides are going to be pissed off if there is a true compromise.”
Trump wants a wall. A wall is the only way to end the open borders madness. The cost right now is 1.8 million illegals with a path to citizenship. The good thing is with a wall, we don’t do this again in 5-10-15 years.
There are 4 items (DACA, wall, lottery, chain), but they’re not all or nothing...and a bad deal (such as Linda’s) is worse than no deal.
Consider DACA traded for the wall and lottery, but chain kept fully intact. With that, DACA will only create 2 million new Democrats, but will let them bring in, or legalize if here, their extended families. If no deal, the DACA bunch will not be voting, much less sponsoring millions of new Democrats. And the net result for us is a wall, which is helpful, and the dropping of 50,000 new Democrat voters (i.e., lottery).
Bottom line, for many of us Trump supporters (maybe most), me included, we always saw the wall as a metaphor, helpful, but really as meaning that we found someone serious about immigration - all types, and Trump’s platform was clear in that area also.
Bottom line, the wall helps a lot with Illegal Entry, but doesn’t help chain migration. So if Trump doesn’t get control of chain migration but vastly increases legal immigration (via DACA) - then the Dems will just swamp us legally, rather than what they’re doing now, which is a combination of legal and illegal. Not good, and we are doing the math and will respond accordingly.
I went to University of Chicago and worked in the computer field so, while I know a great many people who came from many different cultures, I’m trying very hard but not remembering anyone I’ve met who originated in Mexico. The closest is that my niece married a gentleman from Columbia. He’s been here for almost 40 years, and I still can only understand a fraction of his speech as his accent is so very broad.
My only knowledge of Mexican families is ancient - Oscar Lewis’s “Five Families.” I suppose I generalize that and expand it with the observation that most of our young culture is coarsening, but one hopes that the normal mellowing of the young into the mature softens those edges. I do see the screaming and extremeism in newscasts. And I remember the horrible movements of the 60’s that I looked upon agape as a young Republican. On the other hand, my generation IS the one that screwed everything up, so maybe you have something there that this extremism in the young “Dreamers” isn’t going to mellow as well as I hope it will.
My nature is optimistic, so it’s very difficult to get my head around such a pessimistic view of the future.
Exactly. And if there are rules to kick out Dreamer Felons, who could complain about that?
We need to “know” what our goals are and make sure we get there. If the other side cannot give an inch, then they are not being genuine. And at least Trump will call them out on it. In the past the GOP would act like a bunch of pansies.
The hostages can always escape to their home countries.
Yes!
Kill the bill, Dick. PRETTY PLEASE!!!
Little Dick Durbin loses again!
