Bleacher Report ^ | 1/24/18 | Joseph Zucker

....NBA commissioner Adam Silver has been open about his willingness to embrace the practice. He wrote an op-ed for the New York Times in 2014 in which he advocated for the legalization of sports betting.

"In light of these domestic and global trends, the laws on sports betting should be changed," Silver said, citing sports betting’s popularity both among fans in the United States and throughout the world. "Congress should adopt a federal framework that allows states to authorize betting on professional sports....

Adam Silver, the head of the thugs in the NBA, thinks his "fan base" is going to be happy to cut him in on his LeBron monies.

Ha

The NBA is the NFL in short pants.

Actually, though, I don't think they've had the stupidity to take knees during the National Anthem. So I will give them that....otoh, they DID run an owner out of the league for saying foolish things in a private conversation.

Adam Silver strikes me as a mean person.

Fan base wouldn’t be cutting him in on anything, sports books would. makes sense, it’s their product being bet on. Silver’s smart, he’s seeing where things are going. TV ratings are dropping, right now the NBA is bucking the trend but trends have a habit of bucking back, as the country is getting more open with gambling sports betting will be fully legalized, it’s a big pot of money, make the play now. And kicking Stirling out of the league was smart, he was a terrible owner that deliberately made the team bad for years, and had a long history of race problems that was starting to boil over with that phone call. He was bad for the league.

If you thought carriage racing was fixed, wait until the NBA gets into the gambling business.

That would be the end. The games would be manipulated to maximize gambling revenue which means the perception of the game will have to be manipulated (more than it already is). The corruption would be fast, hard, and discoverable.

Yeah. Gambling would bring in more interest to the games. All games, nfl, nba, golf, pool, darts, bowling.....

Nevada and other legal areas are the ones really pushing back.

.gov will pitch taxing it and that will get the ok from lawmakers.

I would much rather dig a ditch for 3 - 4 hours than be forced to sit and watch a pro-basketball game. It’s the most boring thing I’ve ever tried to watch in my life. I know many like it... I’m just saying.

Revenue first, but also interest. In one talk Silver was talking about leveraging smartphone apps so people at the game could participate in prop betting (propositional stuff, will the next basket be made or missed, which player will take the shot, real hardcore betting mostly done at bars with friends) while at the game. He sees the future, and the present, the current generation multitasks, they’re at the game and on their phones, sometimes the stuff they’re doing on their phones is game related (tweeting about it, following player tweets), might as well monetize it.

Nevada will push back, but .gov loves monetizing as much as Adam Silver, it’ll go through.

Oklahoma charges tax of 50 cents per hand of blackjack.

Sounds innocent on 25 or 100 dollar bets but when you are betting $5.00 that is a 10 Percent draw of your money.

So add that to the negative odds of winning the game and it makes it pretty much impossible to win any money.

Yeah such a bad guy he won two awards from the NAALCP.

Besides, my point had nothing to do w/Stirling per se. He may very well have been a jerk. It was HIS team. And he got railroaded based on private thoughts/comments. Very unfair.

You mean he bought two awards from the NAALCP while he was being sued for discriminatory rental practices.

No your point has everything to do with Stirling, might be his team but that team is PART of a larger franchise structured organization and the franchisor gets to set rules, and not just rules for behavior within the structure, but also without if the behavior could/ does bring bad publicity that damages the whole. He didn’t get railroaded, he asshole tendencies were made public, it damaged the reputation of the NBA, the NBA got him a 2 billion dollar exit. Nothing at all unfair about that.
