I can see that your reaction is somewhat like mine to this incredibly unbelievably ashtonishing breaking news. Bleh. Russian spy ships have been off our coasts for decades.

Hey, we’re over there in the Black Sea, in their own back yard. Keep an eye on ‘em; offer ‘em a liberty visit docking at Port Everglades for Spring Break in Fort Lauderdale. That would be one happy crew of Russki sailors!

Are they conducting ballistic missile drills while we listen to our rock and roll music?

That movie was a hoot! 1966 I think. Well worth watching, great comedy.

Invite them over to the Club for drinks, but jam everything they’ve got inside the 3 mile limit.

Loitering in international waters. A genuine non-story.

The Kirov is a pretty ship. I also like the Sovremmeny. The Kusnetsov? not so much.

As far as it being the USS Cole, I doubt the rules of engagement is to include no ammo loaded in the deck guns, and beside, it’s not in port - it’s 30 miles off the coast.

I was a CTT out of Imperial Beach/NCTS San Diego, and we did signal intercept.

Before the Russian visit to 32nd street in 1989, we did a LOT of circles with a 75 mile range north, south, and west. Lots of fun on a 186 foot long ocean going flat bottomed tug boat with the radio shack on the 03 deck. BLARRGH.

In the mid 90’s we took part in Baltops and worked with the Nastoychivyy, which was only a couple of years old at the time. From a distance it looked impressive, but while on the ship we noticed the decay and their attempts to cover it with paint. Every morning we’d see the whole crew lined up to use the showers on the pier. Was told the Air Det OIC would drink windshield washer fluid when he ran out of vodka. They drank our helo guys under the table.

The Admiral Kuznetsov is an interesting ship. The main thing that caught everybody’s attention was all of the black smoke it was belching. The “ski jump” way of launching planes makes it look a little strange. I recall talk about the ship having lots of issues - did a little looking around and found this article - not sure if it’s one I read back in ‘16, but it’s certainly got a couple of pics showing that black smoke!

The Kirov Peter the Great is the only one out of 4 in the line that is in active duty service.

We passed by the Kuznetsov during her first Med deployment in early 96. She was conducting flight ops and we were close enough to see the flight deck crew - wearing shorts and smoking cigs. Whenever she was ‘over the horizon’ you could tell roughly where she was by the black cloud that followed her everywhere.
