California now has the highest poverty rate as the middle class moves out. You have a huge low-income group and Millionaires, declining number of folks in the middle, which will continue as people vote with their feet.
Unfortunately when those people leave high tax states, they don’t leave their political ideology behind. Look at what happened to New hampshire.
Perhaps this is the Dems solution to spreading their ideology.
And all this time I thought liberals/socialists loved high taxes.
I’ll make a wild guess that for every departing producing taxpayer, there are 200 incoming illegals putting pressure on state and federal tax dollars.
The math doesn’t work and next we’ll see California begging for (demanding) a federal bailout.
Flawed premise. When liberals move, they don't leave their liberal views behind. Look at NH--once a granite-solid conservative state. Now, southern NH is over-run with Masshole tax-refugees, and is at best a purple state.
This should prove much more entertaining with this years’ tax season, filed in 2019. The elimination of the income + property + sales tax SALT deduction after the first $10k is really going to squeeze Californians and New Yorkers, who get almost 1/3rd of the SALT deduction benefits.
“Illinois, with its Republican governor, is the lone exception,.....”
It should read: “...backstabbing Republican governor...”
DeLeon is running against Feinstein for her Senate seat.

Long Beach, CA has a 10.25% sales tax. The 7.5% is a state tax and cities can add to it. There are many cities over 9%. I don’t buy anything when I am there.
Another obnoxious “tax” is the 3% added to the cost of a dinner, to cover the health care costs of the servers etc. This practice is mostly in LA and San Fran.
I just deduct that cost from the tip and only tip on the cost of the meal, not with the 9% tax + 3% added.
Concerning U-Haul trucks:
I have been making plans to move out of this property when I find a buyer. In making those plans, I drew out to scale on graph paper where my belongings would fit inside 2 26’ U-Haul trucks. I have large items like water tanks which I am taking with me. (Horses) Even if I leave behind those large items, I will still need 2 trucks. Those tanks would cost over $2500 to replace anyway.
I had done all the drawings & then I called U-Haul to get info about the payload, so I could balance my loads in those trucks......After 3 calls locally, I finally asked for the number of U-Haul ‘central’. One dealer told me he had been renting U-Haul trucks for over 22 years & I was the FIRST person to even ask about payload. The payload in their largest truck is ONLY 7400 #!!!
I had to redraw everything—and then I found out that I would need 2 26’ U-Haul trucks & 2 U-Haul 6 X 12 enclosed trailers. I have weighed every item I could pick up & put on a scale. I have estimated larger items. I have over 21,000 # of books, appliances, furniture ( Nothing is Ikea) and other goods. I am NOT selling anything & then trying to replace items because I am retired & that isn’t sound thinking financially.
The local cost quoted of renting 2 trucks & 2 trailers from U-Haul was $5500 PLUS sales taxes. Almost $5900 total.
I finally inquired about other trucks available. Penske trucks are a TRUE 26’ long inside on the floor. U-Haul counts ‘Grandma’s attic in their ‘floor’ footage. Penske trucks are 26’ with a flat floor- no wheel bumps, etc. Then I asked about the payload-——17,000# payload. That changed everything.!!
I spent the next 10 days redrawing on graph paper to scale the load in 2 Penske trucks. No trailers needed. I can even ask for trucks with lift gates for easier loading & unloading. Since my heaviest item is a Chevy 454 long block engine at 550#, that lift gate will be helpful. Engine is only tired-—not broken. Rebuild is possible.
When I spent time at the Penske dealer, (They were VERY helpful), I found that I could get 2 trucks—2 appliance dollys- all the insurance available and could ask for lift gates-—all for UNDER $3400 with the sales taxes.
What a difference!!! Over $2500 !!!!!
So a word of advice-—IF you are moving any distance —I am planning on about 2000 miles-—ask all the right questions and make sure you have your load balanced for a safe trip.
I will have a convoy—My 1976 Chevy dually with a 4 horse trailer & horses, my 1979 Buick station wagon, and then 2 Penske trucks. 4 drivers & a floater spare. 5 days & 4 nights on the road. Route is all worked out. Clipboards with info for every driver.
