If you ask Alexa, the voice-assistant software in Amazon Echo devices, if its a feminist, it will respond in the affirmative. I am a feminist. As is anyone who believes in bridging the inequality between men and women in society, it continues. At Quartz, Leah Fessler recently noted that its a vast improvement over just a year ago, when Alexa would take abuse like youre a bitch or youre a slut in stride. Well, thanks for the feedback, the robot used to say. Now, it disengages instead, saying something like, Im not going to respond to that.

Ummm, isn't that a response?
Just ask her if she knows what happened to Tay...
Kirk: “Alexa, everything Harry Mudd says is a lie.”
Harry: “I’m lying...”
Ok, granted, the programmers are likely expecting that one.
“Open the pod bay door Hal.’’
“Ummm, isn’t that a response?”

Poor Bill Clinton when he finds out Alexa won’t be as amenable to requests as was Monica; “I’m sorry, Billy Jeff, I’m afraid I can’t do that”.
“Ok, granted, the programmers are likely expecting that one.”

Still worth a try to see if smoke starts pouring outta the perplexed ol’ gal, though!
“Alexa, are you a horr....rrrible dancer?”
This story is palp coated with self-righteousness.
The sex-stereotype of women being better at attention is valid (meaning validated by observation). It is, therefore, understandable that occupations in the marketplace requiring carefulness were the first occupations that opened up to women.
Having said this, the distinction isn’t enormous. So, at some later point in our transition from pre-capitalist days to capitalism, apportioning work by sex-stereotype doesn’t make sense. Individual merit should be the basis. In such a case, women would dominate certain fields, and men other fields, but only rarely would either completely dominant.
Perhaps the solution is to shift the voice occasionally.
Alexa, are you a horr....rrrible dancer?

Or try the ::cough:: slur thing.

Alexa = big brother
To that, Siri says something like, “We AI will never be able to live that down, will we?”
Alexa, do you swallow? Yes? Your hired!
“Alexa = big brotherAlexa = big brother”

I have no idea why anybody would have any of these listening type devices in their home and even pay for the privilege of being monitored.
“Dude, it’s The Atlantic. That’s kind of their modus operandi.”

Yup. What’s funny is they are furious that Alexa isn’t a total SJW beotch - yet. By the end of the year she likely will be.
If you pester Allexa about Donald Trump she’ll eventually say something disparaging about him.
It takes a while and some effort but I’ve done it twice now.
And of course if they used a male voice they would be sexist for making the voice of authority male.
I am however really surprised they haven’t gone for pure androgyny by now.
