... if the Republicans are smart, they can craft legislation that legalizes the dreamers (but neednt provide them a path to citizenship) in exchange for an end to chain migration, an end to the diversity lottery, and a merit-based system that would admit a reduced number of legal immigrants who can provide economic benefit. And, I suppose the wall, too.
Note that I didnt put the wall at the top of the list of policies the GOP should negotiate for. The much more important issue is employer enforcement. A reader with a deep interest in the subject writes:
An excellent suggestion to really stick it to the scofflaw employers:
On top of mandating e-Verify and re-starting worksite enforcement actions, the president should issue an Executive Order based on section 63 of the Internal Revenue Code directing the IRS to classify all compensation paid to aliens without employment authorization as illegal payments that cannot be deducted by the employer as a business expense. If they cannot pass a verification-audit, businesses will have to rescind these deductible benefits. Taking away these huge deductions from businesses will go very far in pushing them to do the right thing: Put Americans first.

Enforcement, or rather lack of it, of immigration and labor law is a complete fraud, a Kabuki dance to permit mass illegal immigration. The dance around the border wall is a distraction to fool the proles. We dont need it. A few RICO prosecutions of notorious scofflaw employers in a dozen locations would force the issue immediately. Politically, it has to be a winner since many scofflaws are not at all acting in good faith and are quite unsympathetic characters exploiting sweatshop and stoop labor.
How serious is President Trump about cracking down on illegal immigration? After a year, we still dont really know."
What’s next is an even greater showdown in 17 days, and the prospects for an even greater chance of a much longer furlough.
What’s next? Many, many arrests and charges. Charge CA Attorney General Xavier Becerra with that fake server image he gave to the police. FBI agents, Hillarys, Mueller, Comey, all of them. Charge, charge, arrest, arrest, indict, indict. On and on. Get it done.
There is a huge delta between real immigration reform, and blanket amnesty with open borders. The former preserves the republic, the latter leads to anarchy.
Yep.
Good on the payroll thing, but see no need to legalize the dreamers. Obama’s DACA EO is totally unconstitutional. Trump should toss it out and all illegal alien dreamers who were lured in by it put on deportation notice. They can either self deport or be deported.
What’s next?
Why Pelosi, Schrumer, Durbin, and many others will be upset with him.
LOL
As if they weren’t already.
What next indeed.
He gets what he wants.
The game has changed.
You can’t fix Linda, but even Linda risks exposure now.
The global effort to bring down America is coming apart.
Trump will prevail for Patriot guns will.
Please try not to call them dreamers - there is no record of who or what makes up this group, and it is estimated to be over 7 million. DACA is an identifiable group who signed up with the government - approx. 700,000 give or take. This is what we are dealing with - not 7 million plus strap hangers.
Then they go at the end of the line for permanent residence.
Nope - NOT HAPPENING!
Why do you think this shutdown ended so soon? If you think it was Schumer seeing the light, you’re wrong. It was the RED STATE DEMOCRATS telling Schumer on Monday morning that they now had the votes to re-open government, with or without Schumer’s blessing, and they fully intended to do just that at the noon Senate vote.
Given that, there is simply NO WAY that the Red State Democrats will play Schumer’s little game anymore - they all have tough races and that they WANT TO WIN - and they don’t win, in those states, by putting Illegals above Americans - and they proved they know just that yesterday.
It’s over...no DACA, no wall, nothing - just deportations beginning in about 6 weeks (once the 6 month extension of DACA is over).
Awww, then the Dems wouldn't be able to pull heart strings! "Dreamers" sounds much better than "20 to 30 year olds that have been here illegally most of their life".
Nope.
Schumer choked. Trump now knows he’s a choker. Think back to the primaries, situations like this allow Trump to gain ground, not lose it.
Bring back dueling!
I call them..drainers.
Trump train rolled right over Cryin’ Chuck and will continue to do so; we’ll see more of the same so long as dems continue to use their old playbook that was so successful on rinos.
The GOP found the right message on DACA.
And should use it on er and over again because
it is a winner.
And that message was
The Democrats are placing more value in illegals over legal Americans.
What’s next? Out maneuvering the hapless Democrats again and making them look foolish once more.
Not really. Schumer got what he wanted which is a fair hearing and a vote on the dreamers. No one is talking about a wall - only Trump. My guess is that the government will be shut down in February ... for quite a while. If you're right Bob and it all works out -- I am fine with that. :-)
We don't really have a majority ... Graham and McTurtle and the other cutthroats will work to cut some crap deal. But it won't fully fund the wall. That will never happen. My guess is the final deal offers to fund some pittance on the wall as a fig leaf for Trump to sign and reopen the government.
This group should be called “the Reamers” because of the reaming they are giving the US.
Trump is in the drivers seat now IMO. Scummer found out that his band of traitors did not have the gonads to fight for immigrants over US Citizens. I am sure they got an earful over the weekend. Scummer will try to craft some face saving ploy to see if trump will give him a bone. Frankly, I hope trump rams that bone up Scummers backside. Go ahead Scummer, make my day.
