Attorney General Jeff Sessions at the public urging of President Donald Trump has been pressuring FBI Director Christopher Wray to fire Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, but Wray threatened to resign if McCabe was removed, according to three sources with direct knowledge.
McGahn has been informed about these ongoing conversations, though he has not spoken with Wray about FBI personnel, according to an administration source briefed on the situation. Trump nominated Wray, previously George W. Bush's Deputy Attorney General, last June to replace James Comey as director.
Trump has also tweeted negatively about other senior FBI officials who are allies of Comey, including the former top FBI lawyer James A. Baker who was recently reassigned after pressure from Sessions.
White House Principal Deputy Press Secretary Raj Shah said of Wray: As weve said, the president has enormous respect for the thousands of rank and file FBI agents who make up the worlds most professional and talented law enforcement agency. He believes politically-motivated senior leaders including former Director Comey and others he empowered have tainted the agencys reputation for unbiased pursuit of justice. The president appointed Chris Wray because he is a man of true character and integrity and the right choice to clean up the misconduct at the highest levels of the FBI and give the rank and file confidence in their leadership.
As I reported last night, Sessions has adamantly urged Wray to make a "fresh start" with his core team.
Trump and other Republicans have been hammering McCabe who was selected by the White House as acting director after the Comey firing for months on Twitter.
The latest: The New York Times and others reported in December that McCabe "is expected to retire after he becomes eligible for his pension [in] early [2018]." But senior Justice officials are still not sure what McCabe plans to do.
The FBI declined to comment for this story. Justice Department spokeswoman Sarah Isgur Flores also declined to comment.
Yeah. So what does McCabe have on Wray?
I would not be surprised if Wray threatened to walk to save that piece of shite McCabe.

That’s exactly what the article is saying happened.
McCabe is dirty.
Anyone standing up for him is dirty, too.
(applause)
I don’t give a rats arse about media firestorms!!!! The real evidence will speak for itself, scorch the friggin earth now!
Its Axios
I was hoping the FBI got someone on the outside to be their Director. The late Obama appointment McCabe is corrupt as all heck. Wray has said to Congress that he’s waiting for the OIG report before he takes action. We’ll see. “McCabe is a “train wreck” that was recently quoted in the press.
Sessions should just tell him we’re rolling up the corruption in the Bureau and he can assist in that or be rolled up with it.
I haven’t trusted Wray since his evasiveness when testifying before congress.
And Schumer had to eat dirt.
Trump wanted DACA and immigration separated out of the budget. That's what happened.
Good Faith between the Dems and Repubs come next. But if you think the President is going to sign anything they come up with...you're being silly.
Now what are the Dems going to do....try to blackmail President Trump....again....with DACA.
He's thinking...
My guess is that there is a way to fund the wall without Congress. I remember Sessions saying that we pay tons of money to Mexicans that could be re-routed. I'll look it up.
The President is playing it just right.
OK - Indict him, he’s violated the Hatch Act and probably much more. Go get him.
Wray ought to be fired. He is no better than corrupt comey.
There are a few FBI career employee who has turned bad, McCabe being one, but most of the corruption comes from appointees - Comey, Mueller, and more.
I suspect there are a number of excellent career employees who serve in large, important positions more than capable of being the director. And possibly among the retired career FBI there are even more.
This cabal of FBI appointees and DOJ troublemakers are not what the FBI is all about. Judicial action is badly needed to get the cleaning process underway.
If it is true let Wray go.
Why can’t we get an FBI director who is loyal to our nation rather than to the Deep State/NeoCons?
mccabe needs to be fired before he can retire
If Wray thinks McCabe is worth protecting then there is something seriously wrong with Wray
Appointing a Bushie Deep Stater to clean up the FBI is likely asking a pyromaniac to head a fire department.
I wish it were real.
Wray is a Mueller and Comey wannabe. Wray wished that he went along when Mueller and Comey pulled that stunt at John Ashcroft's hospital bed.
Having now seen the CNN spin on this report, and they’re eating it up, this may indicate that McCabe is about to be fired or prosecuted (or BOTH!) - and this is setting the stage, “no, McCabe & Comey (and Wray?) are good folks but that darn Trump doesn’t want anybody to learn about ‘collusion’” - or something ... but IMO it’s a preemptive announcement from deep state and that could be one implication.
