Pope Francis is expected to give the final blessing at the funeral Thursday of Cardinal Bernard Law, the former Boston archbishop who resigned in disgrace during the Catholic Church's sex-abuse scandal, prompting outrage from abuse survivors.
Francis' prominent role in the ceremony has fueled the controversy over the decision to grant Law a full cardinal's funeral at St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican.
The story was made into a celebrated movie, Spotlight, and the scandal forced the Catholic church to rethink the way it dealt with child abuse in the church.
'Gates of hell wide open' Alexa MacPherson, a native of the Boston area who says she is a survivor of sexual abuse by a priest, responded angrily Wednesday. "With his passing, I say I hope the gates of hell are open wide to welcome him, because I feel no redemption for somebody like him is worthwhile," she told reporters.
Robert Costello, another Boston-area native, says that Law covered up for the cleric who abused him. Instead of being given a Vatican funeral, Law should just "disappear," he told reporters in the Boston office of attorney Mitchell Garabedian, who represents many who accuse priests of sex abuse.
Law never faced criminal sanctions for his role in allowing abusive priests to remain in parishes. The scandal reverberated through the church, exposing similar allegations worldwide that compromised its moral authority and led to years of multimillion-dollar settlements.

Pope Francis is a jerkwad.
I hope he falls in a hole.
Newt Gingrich also showed to pay his respects. I cant keep Newt in high regard for more than a few months at a time.
Today’s Pope is the Barack Obama of the Catholic Church.
Maybe you should start referring to him as the ANTI-Pope.
This scandal was the nail in the coffin for Catholicism for me.
I was always suspicious of Catholic hypocrisy during my upbringing as a Catholic. This was the last straw.
Now, Id much rather go to Dr. Stanleys First Baptist Church of Atlanta than any Catholic church.
Love Catholics, hate the Anti-Pope.
Somehow the full regalia of the funeral honors seems out of place, and even contrary to what Francis has been representing himself as standing for. A quiet private funeral yes. But to celebrate the untransformed uncaring openly? Make up your mind Francis.
Callista Gingrich is the US ambassador to the Vatican.
You and me both. There are times when he does some great things. Then he does something equally not great.
I don’t really care to follow Pope Francis around with a pooper scooper, but the guy needs someone to.
The guy just doesn’t get it, on a number of issues.
These Bishops and others that covered for the child molesters, it is disgusting. In some instances they moved a guy known to be a problem to a new flock without warnings.
By no stretch of the imagination is that Christian behavior, when addressing the leadership. As for the abusive players, they should have gone to prison just like everyone else.
Once people in the church covered for them, they became criminals too > IMO. They should do prison time as well.
Now to celebrate one of them? This goes all the way to the top. What a damning thing.
I sincerely think this Pope should step down. If he isn’t inclined to do it himself, then church leaders should gather and help him out, way out... and down the road.
I read that as Pepe before I put on my glasses...
Mr. Bergoglio is despicable and beneath contempt.
I am genuinely sorry for my Catholic friends that this sick degenerate is what they have to tolerate for a leader.
I pray that God replaces this odious man with a godly and honorable man like John Paul II or Benedict.
Its so sad, isnt it?
The original religion of Christ has fallen so far!
I dont care if she is Pope. Gingrich chose to PAY RESPECTS TO A MAJOR RELIGOUS PEDOPHILE ENABLER. He of the screwing of the women in his office etc. It really lowers my opinion of him back down. He did not have to attend that funeral. I dont know that she did.
Yes, I’ve heard that all denominations have similar problems.
If you’re going to church-hop based on whether or not there’s hypocrite..
Hypocrisy is one thing. Decades of criminal malfeasance and aiding and abetting is quite another. Then theres attacking the victims of these monsters to toss into the mix.
If the RCC werent (allegedly) a church theyd have been shut down under the RICO statutes decades ago.
L
Comrade Pope sold out to Satan and his NWO quislings a long time ago.
Actually, RICO suits have filed against several dioceses, and dismissed. I fully support turning those who commit these crimes over to the civil authorities—I have been doing research to build a case for going after some of these high-ranking offenders, which is one reason I follow threads like this. RICO is geared towards prosecuting leaders of legally-defined “enterprises” under certain specific conditions though; using it to shut down the entire Roman Catholic Church is outside its scope and not a feasible legal strategy.
