Turkey opened a new front in Syria's nearly seven-year-old war on Saturday, launching airstrikes against a U.S.-backed Kurdish militia in Afrin province that raise the prospect of a further strain on relations between Ankara and Washington.
The operation, dubbed "Operation Olive Branch" by Ankara, pits Turkey against Kurdish fighters allied to the United States at a time when ties between Turkey and Washington - NATO allies and members of the coalition against Islamic State - appear dangerously close to a breaking point.
The strikes on the Syrian-Kurdish YPG militia hit some 108 targets, the Turkish military said. On land, the Turkey-backed Free Syrian Army rebels were also helping the operation in Afrin, a senior Turkish official said.

Operation Olive Branch...Erdogan has a very dry sense of humor.
Turkey is NATO also. Could this mean a split is emminent? I don’t see Trump letting them pound their allies (probably have US advisors with them.) What is your guess? Can we afford Turkey partnering with Russia? They already are in many ways.
...against a U.S.-backed Kurdish militia...
Who’s side is Turkey on?
NATO is a joke anyway and Turkey has a history of attacking NATO allies. Greece, US, what difference does it make?
We are not in that area. It was for Russia to protect.
Russia has control of airspace.
So, US is out of that game.
I’ve read that the Kurds have Manpods. If true, and I suspect it is, Turkey could get some of this repaid by the Kurds alone.
They have consistently repelled all ground attempts to enter Efrin region. Turkey and their surrogates.
Nothing about Erdogan the Islamist is humorous. Nothing.

Mine, dammit ...

No John, Turkey's on my side.
Let’s try “Operation Stingers II” to support the YPG. It worked very well in “Operation Stingers I” in Afghanistan.
The YPG’s slogan should be “Make Erdogan’s air force a junk pile”.
Turkey is on the side of the good guys here.
CIA and McCrazy support the bad guys.
On the side of despots. Turkey shelters ISIS fragments that escaped, Al Qaeda, FSA terrorists and Muslim Brotherhood Terrorists. And he partners with Iran and Assad. And thinks he is partners with Russia. I think Putin still remembers the Russian Jet that Erdogan shot down.
*** Whos side is Turkey on? ***
Turkey is on Turkey’s side
Back in June, YPG was given an option. They stated they would embrace Saudi Arabia & US over Syria. I remember stating, they would be betrayed by the US.
Then, in the fall US cut off weapons supplies to them.
Last week, they went to Russia, and rejected a deal. Turkey went to Russia a few days later.
Russia pulled out of Afrin, and now the Kurds are probably realizing their weapons are no match for the weapons Turkey has purchased from the US, and their NATO allies..fighter jets, tanks, well trained.
Kurds did not choose wisely, and are going to be decimated.
However there's nothing but hunkering down when the artillery comes raining in boys.
However with that amount of firepower they could easily take Damascus if they had the manpower, vehicles & armor should they decide to muster it.
** Good thing we got NATO to back the US and Kurds up! **
Forgot the /S tag on that.
With friends like these who needs enemies?
Yeah, we can ship them secretly through our Embassy in Libya.
Operation Olive Branch...Erdogan has a very dry sense of humor.
He isn't alone, considering what is in the wake of 'Operation Enduring Freedom'
I long for the good old days when military ops weren't PR stunts.
Turkey's side.
Real question is, who's side is the CIA on?
