Depression and anxiety are afflicting Americans who are concerned at the fate of the environment, according to a study of the mental health effects of climate change.
Those hit hardest are women and people with low incomes who worry about the planets long-term health, said the study published this week in the journal Global Environmental Change.
Symptoms include restless nights, feelings of loneliness and lethargy.
Climate change is a persistent global stressor, Sabrina Helm, lead author of the paper and professor of family and consumer sciences at the University of Arizona, said.
Risks to mental health from climate change are a creeping development, she told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.
World leaders mobilized to curb man-made greenhouse gas emissions to fight global warming in a 2015 agreement, although the United States has since said it would withdraw from the landmark deal.

Depression, no maple syrup, and no coaco.
I’ve slept like a baby for the last 365 days
It is cold and cruel. I hope more like mass walk-outs on the craziness.
Gore’s fault.
I have this. I am discouraged and let down by the number of people believing mans actions cause climate change. Im really depressed and I dont know how much of this BS I can take. How can we function on a planet with people who think they are more powerful than Gd and nature? Where are my anxiety meds?
Have faith... there’s a new age of youngsters that despise the Millenials and their vacant causes.
Good news !
If “climate change” can be reduced by therapy, it will be a lot cheaper than reducing carbon emissions.
Not everyone in a generation sucks. I love my 2 millennial sons. But tides will turn. There are sucky gen xers too.
Millennials (capital M) embody a generational behavior and attitude, but that’s not to condemn every soul that arrived at that time.
I’m on the tail edge of the Boomers, and my kids have yet to spring into relevance.
Trust me, I avoid stereotyping individuals. My focus concerns systematic influences.
Right. I think gen x disappeared somehow. Sadly we are the obama generation I guess. We do all the work but we seem kind of quiet.
I have two kids in your kids future generation too.
All of their mental health proffesionals should give the same advice as this guy’s;

God bless, FRiend. Let’s do the best we can, and always with the reassurance of unconditional love.
You are thinking of low income conservatives. Low income liberals don’t worry about finding a job. They worry about their welfare checks and anything else that the far left tells them to worry about.
So mental illness is linked to mental illness. Who knew?
