Trump to Democrats: no immigration talk until government reopened

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump and Republican lawmakers took a tough stance on Saturday after the U.S. Congress failed to fund federal agencies, saying they would not negotiate on immigration until Democrats help end the government shutdown.

Funding for federal agencies ran out at midnight with no agreement in Congress, meaning the second year of Donald Trump’s presidency began without a fully functioning government. Lawmakers failed to resolve an impasse over Democrats’ demands to include certain measures, including protections for young undocumented immigrants, in any short-term spending legislation.

U.S. government workers were told to stay home or, in some cases, work without pay until new funding is approved in the first federal government shutdown since a 16-day funding lapse in October 2013.

The Republican-controlled Senate and House of Representatives were holding rare weekend sessions on Saturday, facing a political crisis that could have an impact on congressional elections in November.

”The president will not negotiate on immigration reform until Democrats stop playing games and reopen the government,” White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said.

I heard Schumer say that two bipartisan agreements had been reached. What a crock!

I know that at least for one of them, he’s talking about the Flake-Grahmnesty travesty. If you find a couple of weak sister quislings on the other side to take advantage of, that’s not “bipartisan.”

If true ‘bipartisan’ agreements were reached, why didn’t they simply vote on it, and then override Trump’s veto?

Answer: Nothing close to a ‘bipartisan’ agreement was reached...which is your point.

Will American EVER wake up and understand that the democrats are anti American, digging their heels in the sand for ILLEGAL ALIENS rather than red blooded Americans? They make me sick.

Trump really knows how to turn the tables on the Democrats.

They never before had to deal with a successful businessman; which is why they continue to float the nonsense that he is stupid. By using their goofy labels, they are indicting themselves.

HaHa! They thought he would sweat and cave in. They do something goofy and he sends them back an award-winning tweet.

Bravo!!! Let the libs take the heat for messing with the lives of millions of people for less than 1 million DACA members for their voting base. And they should make sure the public is aware this is all it really is.

One more thing - I never expected to enjoy all the back and forth talk that is going on.

Total shock and dismay on the part of the liberals around the country.

He sponsored the bill, if he doesn’t vote no it dies and cannot be brought back up by the Senate for the remainder of the current session. In other words the bill dies.

Why did the Republican Senate Majority Leader vote "YES" for a Government shutdown?

The congressional majority leaders often vote with the opposition on losing procedural votes like this one. This allows them to bring the bills back up for reconsideration (a revote) at a later time.

Yeah, I don’t think any candidate withstood as much pressure than Trump. Outlasting Schumer on this will be a cake walk.
