Paul Ryan: Republicans Need To 'Pay Attention' To Democrats' Big Special Election Win

WASHINGTON ― Wisconsin Democrats scored a major upset victory Tuesday when they won a state Senate race in a district that Donald Trump easily carried in the 2016 presidential election.

Top Wisconsin Republicans ― including House Speaker Paul Ryan ― acknowledged it was a blow to their party, and it could mean bad news for the GOP in the 2018 midterm elections.

“I know this district fairly well. It’s not my district. It’s over in western Wisconsin. But typically, we’ve held this seat. And we lost this seat last night,” Ryan told reporters in Washington on Wednesday. “So yeah, I think we should pay attention to it.”

Did Trump’s unpopularity play a part in the loss? Maybe. St Croix County gets their news from the Twin Cities - hardly a bastion of right-wing thinking. Did the GOP candidate ignore St Croix County? Maybe he took it for granted that the votes were his.

I think people are getting bent out of shape over nothing. Moore was a rotten candidate even before the scandal (real or trumped-up). Last time he ran for statewide office was in 2012, with Romney at the top of the ticket. Romney beat Obama by 22.4%, whereas Moore won his Chief Justice spot by 4%. Moore went on to lose to Jones by 1.5%. That's net drop of 5.5%, fully-accounted for by the scandal plus Jones outraising Moore 5 to 1.

If you dig below the surface, you may find that the GOP candidate for this WI district was just no damn good. Some candidates are competent enough to win primaries, but not general election races.

He got them out to vote for Trump. I am not a big Ryan fan but this is no reflection on his efforts.

Why do only 1% of GOP voters even know who she is? or can name RNC chairman?

You ask the pertinent question of 2018. Pretty scary.

As long as the Republicans nominate RINOs - I will NEVER FOR THEM, NONE OF THEM.

(sound familiar)

Those of you who immediately spit out Lyin Ryan, or some such insult, at seeing his name never seem to acknowledge that he managed to get the healthcare bill through the House, as well as a tax bill approved and a ton of other bills that are lingering in the Senate today.

I’ve never understood the animosity toward Ryan because I’m certain he’s both trying to do his best, and is accomplishing much in the House. It’s the Senate that keeps mucking things up with McConnell still letting the filibuster rule hamstring him.

The same people calling for the GOP to pull together and that everyone should get out and vote are often dividing that same GOP by insulting Ryan every chance they get. It’s hard to call for unity when you at the same time call someone like Ryan every name in the book.

Not only do you irritate Ryan (though I doubt he pays much attention), but you also irritate those of us who don’t see him as anything near the equivalent of a Graham or McCain.

Not that this will change a single mind, but hey, at least consider it.

Yes. Thanks Ryan for mostly wasting Trump's first year.

This was, like Alabama, strictly lack of republican turnout.

Republicans won 2 out or 3 and the story is of course the one they lost.

The real story on this one loss was 12% republican turnout...

Had republican voters showed up the district doesn’t flip.

Yes democrats are going to show up, the problem is if the MAGA voters don’t Dems will win.

Republicans better get on board with MAGA and get their voters motivated

You are absolutely right. In my area democrats are much more active and organized in bringing out the vote.

12% really? Ryan doesn’t get to guiltlessly walk away from this one. Ryan came to Trump very late in the game. His support, in name only, was for Ryan’s benefit when he saw how effective the Trump campaign really was and he wanted to steal some of the spill over. Ryan is no Trump supporter. He is more of an athletic supporter.

Wonder how engaged Walker was for this seat. Also seems that because folks liked/voted for Trump doesn’t mean they will vote for a Repub just because he’s in the same Party as Trump even in places where Trump won big. And the GOP/NRC doesn’t do what it can while the Dems go all out for the seats.

Again, Republicans held 2 out of 3... but of course the media focus on the one win.

The real story here is that republicans in the district they lost had a 12% turnout... had republicans shown up the district would not have flipped.

This is the story for 18. Dems are going to show up, and republicans better start getting their base and particularly the MAGA voter to show up this fall.

If typical off year apathy happens for them, they will lose a lot of seats that should not be lost.

If I were Trump I would make sure I am rallying all over the place late summer and through the fall, and stressing just how important the folks need to show up unless they want more Nancy Pelosi and economic slowdowns etc etc etc...

Republicans think they can hang their hat on the tax cut and that’s going to be enough they are going to wind up disappointed. Get your message clear and pound it home. Get on board with MAGA unapologetically! Fight non stop and be confrontational and proud to g
Fight to put America first.
