A Marine is behind bars for defending himself and his family from an armed thug.
It was an ordinary evening for Joey Nelson. He was at home with his fiance, their 3 week old child, and a couple of friends. Then, all of a sudden, they were startled by violent pounding on the front door, and someone trying to force their way in. Nelson grabbed his gun and told the thug to leave. Thats when things turned violent.

Michael Wilson, the criminal shooter who started the shootout. He is now considered the victim after shooting at Nelson and his family.

Horribly written and confusing account. Reporter sounds like product of ComDem education system.
Only crime of the Marine? Carrying concealed weapon without a license.
It is confusing, but there is probably more to this than article discloses.
That's not the way I read it. The home invader who was shooting into the house was only charged with the carrying without a license charge. The marine who returned fire to protect his family, including an infant daughter, was charged with many charges including attempted murder and is looking at a possible life sentence.
Understand that shooting people is generally illegal, and it’s normal to throw the shooter into a cage until a judge sorts out what happened & why.
Seriously: if you fire in self-defense, expect to go to jail. You may be exonerated, but you’ll likely be arrested first.
Its probably illegal these days to still have a prescription AFTER it expires. Who knows. Article raises more questions than it answers.
“Concealed Weapon”... IN YOUR OWN HOME ????
Except in Texas. They’ll just apologize for taking such a long time to clean up the mess.
What the ____ is this woman in detroit thinking of? Looks pretty clear to me the guy pounding on the door is in the wrong place and drugged out of his mind and very dangerous and in need of being shot and killed.
My LOCKED front gate is more than 500 yards from the road. From there to the house is a free fire kill zone. I fully intend to use it if necessary. I may fire one warning shot up to about 400 yards. Any advance beyond that is a gift or a mistake to anyone I don’t know.
If there is anyone pounding on any of my doors I will also lose a door.
This is only right to be able and allowed to defend your space.
Yes, it’s insane.
I suspect there are some things left out of the article. Or that the reporter is on drugs themself.
Not done that way here.
But this is not Detroit.
Agree.
The picture of the charging prosecutor explains it all.
I do not and would not live wherever this took place.
It’s nice that neither of us live in Detroit.
Nor will I.
Yes, ComDem Logic? (fuzzy state)
White Marine, black prosecutor, Wayne County, Michigan. End of story.
BTW, this happened in Westland, a western Detroit suburb. This sort of thing does not happen there every day.
Whether or not one carries concealed, it is prudent for all American gun owners to have some kind of self defense insurance.
I’ve been with Second Call Defense for years. Excellent group.

Lowest common denominator legal logic. Endemic throughout the states.
Another hellhole in America that’s befitting the President’s colorful alternate description. However, unlike other parts of the world that have always been down and out, Detroit was once a great city before being wrecked by unions and liberal thinking.
By even the most convoluted hoplophobe thinking, Nelson, the Marine, was the victim in this case. It was he who called the police.
Wilson was blatantly guilty of aggravated assault and injury with a deadly weapon while trespassing -- and, attempted murder. (He was just a lousy shot...)
WTH is wrong with the imbecile who charged the Marine with ANY crime?
It would have been dead simple to determine if Wilson's "concealed" weapon had been fired recently. (Nelson didn't shoot himself...) What idiot determined that Wilson was just "carrying concealed"?
Was Wilson some sort of buddy (or co-conspirator) with the LEOs on scene?
